Layered PDF Patterns: Setting Up Color-Coded Sizes

A layered PDF pattern solves a real problem: a nested multi-size sheet is a tangle of overlapping lines, and printing all of it wastes paper and confuses the eye. By placing each size on its own toggleable layer, the file lets a customer switch off every size but theirs and print a clean single-size pattern. The mechanism is the PDF optional content group.

Building one well takes more than exporting with layers turned on. Layer naming, color coding and shared elements all need deliberate setup, or the customer ends up with mislabeled layers or a piece missing its notches. This article covers how to structure a layered PDF that prints cleanly for the person at the other end.

How PDF layers actually work

PDF layers are called optional content groups. Each group can be shown or hidden independently in a compliant reader, and content assigned to a hidden group simply does not print. This is the entire basis of a layered pattern: each size is an optional content group the customer can switch off.

The catch is reader support. Full desktop readers honor optional content groups, but many mobile viewers and lightweight apps ignore them and print everything. A layered pattern must therefore tell the customer to use a reader that respects layers, or the feature silently fails.

One layer per size, plus a shared base

The clean structure is one layer per size for the size-specific cutting lines, plus a separate always-on base layer for elements common to every size: grainlines, piece names, notch positions that do not move, calibration squares and instructions. The customer toggles sizes; the base stays visible.

Deciding what is shared and what is per-size takes care. Cutting lines are per-size. A grainline that sits identically across sizes can be shared. Get this wrong and a customer either loses their grainline when they hide other sizes or sees a clutter of grainlines from every size at once.

Color coding that helps rather than hurts

  • Assign each size a distinct, easily distinguished color rather than shades of one hue.
  • Keep the shared base layer in a neutral color, typically black, so it reads under any size.
  • Avoid pale colors that vanish on a home printer or when a customer prints in grayscale.
  • Name each layer with its size clearly, not a generic Layer 1, Layer 2.
  • Provide a legend on the sheet mapping color to size for anyone printing in black and white.

Calibration and the test square

Every layered PDF needs a calibration square on the always-on base layer, ideally a labeled 10 cm by 10 cm box. Because the whole point is home printing, the customer must be able to confirm true scale before cutting, and the square is the only reliable way to catch a fit-to-page setting that shrank the pattern.

Place the square where it prints on the first tile so it is impossible to miss. Instruct the customer to print at 100 percent, measure the square, and only then hide the other sizes and print the full pattern. Calibration first, printing second.

Exporting and testing the file

When a layered PDF is the right choice

Layered PDFs shine for standard graded patterns sold to many customers who each want one size. They are less relevant to made-to-measure work, where the pattern is already generated at a single set of measurements and there is only one size to print, so layers add nothing.
