Working with Layered PDF Patterns: Print Only Your Size

A layered PDF uses optional content groups, the formal name for PDF layers. Each layer can be shown or hidden independently. In a pattern, the designer assigns each size to its own layer, and often puts shared elements like the title block or grainlines on always-on layers.

When you open the file, you see all sizes at once by default. The power comes from the layers panel, where you turn off the sizes you do not want until only your cutting line remains.

Not every PDF viewer exposes layer controls. Lightweight or browser-based viewers often ignore optional content groups entirely, showing every layer with no way to toggle. To use a layered pattern, you need a reader with a layers or optional-content panel.

Full-featured desktop PDF applications are the safe choice. Before assuming a pattern is not layered, open it in a capable reader and look for the layers panel rather than concluding the feature is missing.

Cutting mistakes cluster around moments of ambiguity, and a wall of nested size lines is pure ambiguity. Removing every line but your own eliminates the most common source of mis-cuts, especially on curved areas like armholes and necklines where adjacent sizes crowd together.

Some PDF patterns are flat, with all sizes baked into a single non-toggleable layer. These still print correctly; you simply trace your size by hand as you would from paper. The layered feature is a convenience, not a requirement for a valid pattern.
