Tailoring a Jacket: Canvas, Padding and Structure

A well-tailored jacket holds its shape on and off the body because of an internal architecture the wearer never sees. Layers of canvas, padding and carefully shaped interfacings work together to support the chest, roll the lapel, and stand the collar, transforming flat cloth into a three-dimensional garment. Understanding this structure is what separates dressmaking from tailoring.

Full canvas, half canvas and fused construction

Jackets are built in three broad ways. A full-canvas jacket has a layer of canvas floating through the entire front and lapel, hand- and machine-attached so it moulds to the body over time; it is the benchmark of fine tailoring. A half-canvas jacket carries canvas through the chest and lapel only, with fusible below. A fully fused jacket relies on fusible interfacing alone.

Each approach trades cost and labour against drape and longevity. Canvas moves with the body and improves with wear; fusing is faster and cheaper but can stiffen or, over years, delaminate. The choice sets the character of the garment.

The chest piece and canvas

At the heart of a tailored front is the chest piece: layers of hair canvas, sometimes with a domette or felt overlay, shaped to fill and support the chest. It gives the jacket front its gentle convex curve and prevents the dreaded collapse over the breastbone.

Hair canvas, woven with horsehair or goat hair, is springy and resilient precisely because it resists being flattened. That resilience is what holds the chest's shape through wear and pressing.

Pad-stitching the lapel and collar

Pad-stitching is the defining hand technique of tailoring. Rows of small diagonal stitches attach the canvas to the under-collar and lapel while simultaneously curving them, because the stitches are worked over a roll held in the hand. The result is a lapel that rolls softly and a collar that hugs the neck.

The density and tension of pad-stitching control how firmly the area is shaped: tighter, closer rows produce a firmer roll. It is slow, meditative work and one of the clearest markers of a hand-tailored garment.

Shoulder shaping and the sleeve head

The shoulder is where structure becomes most visible. Shoulder pads support the line from neck to sleeve, while a sleeve head, a strip of bias wool or fleece set into the cap, fills out the top of the sleeve and smooths the transition from shoulder to arm.

The amount of padding is a style decision, from the soft, natural shoulder of unstructured tailoring to the firm, built-up line of more formal coats. Either way, the goal is a clean curve with no divot below the shoulder seam.

Taping the roll line and edges

A length of tape, often linen or twill, is stitched along the lapel roll line and the front edge. On the roll line it controls and shapes the fold of the lapel, drawing it in slightly so the lapel hugs the chest. Along the front edge it prevents stretching and keeps the edge crisp and straight through wear.

This taping is subtle but structurally vital; it is part of why a fine jacket's edges stay sharp for years rather than rippling.

Bringing the structure together

These elements are not added in isolation; they are integrated as the front is built, before the lining goes in. The canvas is attached, the lapel and collar pad-stitched, the edges taped, the chest shaped, and only then is the jacket assembled and lined to enclose all of it.

The sequence matters because each layer supports the next. Rushing or skipping steps shows up later as a collapsed chest, a lapel that will not roll, or a collar that stands away from the neck.

  • Attach and shape the front canvas and chest piece.
  • Pad-stitch the lapel and under-collar to curve them.
  • Tape the roll line and front edges to control and stabilise them.
  • Set the shoulder line with pads and a sleeve head.
