Interfacing is the hidden layer that gives collars their stand, waistbands their firmness, and buttonholes their stability. It is also one of the most misunderstood materials in the workroom, where the wrong weight or the wrong type can undermine an otherwise excellent garment. The choice between fusible and sew-in is the first decision, and it shapes everything that follows.

What interfacing is for
Interfacing adds body, support and stability exactly where a garment needs it: collars, cuffs, plackets, waistbands, facings, pocket openings and buttonhole areas. It prevents stretching at stress points, reinforces details, and lets the fabric hold a shape it could not maintain alone.
It is not a one-size product. Interfacing comes in woven, knit and non-woven constructions, in a range of weights, and in both fusible and sew-in forms, and the right choice depends on the fabric and the role it must play.
Fusible interfacing
Fusible interfacing carries a heat-activated adhesive on one side and bonds to the fabric under heat, steam and pressure. It is fast, convenient and gives a clean, smooth result on many fabrics, which is why it dominates modern production and home sewing alike.
Its weaknesses are specific. The adhesive can bubble or peel if applied poorly, it can show through on very thin or smooth fabrics, and it is unsuitable for heat-sensitive cloth and most textured or napped fabrics where pressure would crush the surface.
Applying fusible without bubbling
- 1.Pre-shrink both fabric and interfacing if the garment will be washed; a hot iron can shrink them at different rates later.
- 2.Place the adhesive side against the wrong side of the fabric.
- 3.Press, do not iron: lift and lower the iron, holding firm pressure with steam for the recommended time in each spot.
- 4.Let the piece cool flat before moving it so the bond sets fully.
Pro tip
Sliding the iron rather than pressing it straight down is the most common cause of bubbles and shifted interfacing.
Sew-in interfacing
Sew-in interfacing is held in place by stitching rather than adhesive, basted into seam allowances or caught in construction. It is the traditional choice and remains superior for tailored garments, heat-sensitive fabrics, and any cloth with a texture or sheen that fusing would mar.
Because it floats against the fabric rather than bonding to it, sew-in interfacing produces a softer, more natural hand and moves with the cloth. It takes more time and skill but rewards both on high-end work.
Matching weight and type to fabric
The guiding principle is that interfacing should support the fabric without overpowering it. As a rule, it should be the same weight as the fashion fabric or slightly lighter, never heavier, or the interfaced area will feel stiff and divorced from the rest of the garment.
Match the stretch behaviour too. A knit fabric needs a knit or stretch interfacing so the interfaced area retains some give; a woven structural area such as a waistband benefits from a stable woven or firm non-woven.
- Sheer and lightweight wovens: lightweight sew-in or fine fusible, tested first for show-through.
- Shirting collars and cuffs: crisp fusible woven for a clean stand.
- Tailored wool jackets: sew-in hair canvas and weft-insertion fusibles.
- Knits: knit or tricot fusible that stretches with the cloth.
- Waistbands: firm woven fusible or a dedicated waistband interfacing.
Always test on a scrap
No chart replaces a test. Fuse or baste a sample to an offcut of your actual fabric, then press, fold and handle it. You are checking for bubbling, show-through, an appropriate degree of stiffness, and how the combination behaves when bent.
This five-minute test prevents the far more expensive mistake of discovering a poor match only after the collar is built.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use fusible interfacing on any fabric?
No. Avoid it on heat-sensitive synthetics, textured or napped fabrics, very sheer cloth where it will show, and most fine tailoring where a sew-in gives a better hand. Always test on a scrap first.
Should interfacing be heavier than my fabric?
No. Interfacing should match the fabric weight or be slightly lighter. Heavier interfacing makes the area feel stiff and disconnected from the rest of the garment.
Why does my fusible interfacing bubble?
Usually because the iron was slid rather than pressed, the fabric was not pre-shrunk, or the bond did not get enough heat, steam, pressure or time. Press straight down and let it cool flat.
