The waistband is a small component doing a large job: it anchors a skirt or trousers at the waist, resists the strain of movement, and sets the fit at one of the body's most demanding points. A waistband that rolls, gapes or stretches ruins an otherwise good garment, so it deserves proper construction rather than an afterthought.
There are two main forms. A straight waistband is cut on the straight grain and folds around the waist edge, suited to a natural waistline. Straight versus contoured bands
A straight waistband is a simple rectangle, interfaced and folded lengthwise, that wraps the waist edge. It works when the waistline sits at the true waist, where the body is close to a cylinder. Because it is cut on the straight grain it is stable and easy to make, but it cannot follow the curve of a waist that sits lower on the hip.
A contoured waistband is cut as a shaped curve, matching the angle of a garment whose waistline sits below the natural waist. It hugs the body where a straight band would either gape at the top or dig in at the bottom. The trade-off is that its curved seams need more careful handling and interfacing to hold their shape.
Interfacing for a band that holds
A waistband must resist stretching along its length, or it will grow with wear and the garment will slip down. Interface the full band, choosing a firm interfacing for a crisp tailored waistband and a softer one for a casual garment. A strip of interfacing with a pre-marked fold line, or a specialist waistband interfacing, keeps the fold crisp and the band an even width.
On a contoured band, the interfacing also stabilizes the curved seams and stops the shaped edges from stretching out of true during handling. Cut the interfacing to the full band including any wrap extension, so the buttonhole or hook area is supported.
Attaching a straight waistband
- 1.Interface the band and press the long fold line and the seam allowance on the inner edge.
- 2.Stitch the interfaced long edge to the garment waist, right sides together, matching notches and any wrap extension.
- 3.Fold the band right sides together at the ends and stitch across each end, including the underlap extension.
- 4.Trim, grade and turn the ends right side out for square corners.
- 5.Fold the band down over the seam and secure the inner edge by stitching in the ditch or edgestitching from the right side.

Fitting the waist correctly
The waistband, not the garment body, sets the final waist measurement, so it must be cut to the actual waist plus wearing ease plus the underlap for the closure. Too tight and it cuts in when seated; too loose and it slides. A small amount of ease, enough to slip a couple of fingers under the band, keeps it comfortable through a day of sitting and standing.

Avoiding the rolling waistband

On a contoured band, rolling can also come from the curve fighting the body, which points to a fitting adjustment rather than a construction fault.
Understitching or a discreet row of topstitching along the top fold can further stabilize a band prone to rolling, at the cost of a visible line, so weigh appearance against function for the particular garment.
