Fitted Round Neck Shirred Puff Dress

Pattern #4072
Tech. Description

Shirred Sleeve Knit Dress

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a fitted knit dress featuring a round neckline and distinctive shirred puff sleeves.

When To Wear

This versatile knit dress is perfect for a range of occasions, offering both comfort and style:

  • Casual & Everyday Wear: Its comfortable knit fabric and relaxed yet stylish silhouette make it perfect for daily activities.
  • Smart-Casual Gatherings: Easily dressed up with accessories for lunches, informal meetings, or social events.
  • Transitional Season Styling: The three-quarter shirred sleeves offer comfort and style suitable for spring and autumn wear.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a close-fitting, knee-length dress designed to flatter the figure.

Neckline: Features a classic round neckline, providing a versatile base for accessorizing.

Sleeves: Distinctive three-quarter length puff sleeves, expertly constructed with an upper and lower sleeve, and an insert piece. These sleeves are shirred at the upper arm and again at the cuff with elastic thread, creating a beautifully gathered and voluminous effect.

Back: Designed with a clean center back seam for a tailored finish.

Closure: a convenient pull-on style, leveraging the stretch of knit fabrics for ease of wear.

Hem: a simple, straight hemline finishing gracefully at knee length.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires familiarity with sewing knit fabrics, working with elastic thread for shirring, and setting in sleeves.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose knit fabrics that offer comfort and drape for the fitted silhouette and shirred sleeves:

  • Medium to high stretch knit fabrics (natural or blended fibers)

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic thread

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 1.5 cm; neckline allowance – 1 cm. Other seams 0.7 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Upper sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Lower sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Insert – 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

  1. Stitch darts on the front. Trim dart excess with an overlocker.
  2. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the allowance and press to the left side.
  3. Stitch shoulder seams. Overlock allowances and press to the back.
  4. Overlock the front and back necklines. Fold allowances inwards and topstitch.
  5. Along the upper edge of the insert, sew a stitch with loosened upper thread and gather. Attach the insert to the upper sleeve. Overlock the allowance. Sew rows with elastic thread on the insert. On the lower sleeve, along the upper and lower edges, sew stitches with loosened upper thread and gather. Attach the lower sleeve to the insert. Overlock the allowance.
  6. Set sleeves into armholes, matching marks. Overlock the allowance.
  7. Stitch side seams and sleeve seam. Overlock the allowance and press to the back.
  8. Stitch the cuff into a loop. Fold in half lengthwise and attach to the sleeve. Overlock the allowance. Sew rows with elastic thread on the cuff.
  9. Overlock the bottom edge of the dress. Fold to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
