Tech. Description

Long Sleeve Draped Crossover V-Neck Top

A women's hip-length top for knit fabric with long set-in sleeves and a deep V-neckline filled by a large double-layer collar: its two parts cross at the point of the V, and at the back the collar rises high and folds softly around the neck.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and winter with jeans, trousers or a skirt.
  • Instead of a top and scarf under a coat or an open jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, close to the body, ending at the hip.

Neckline: Deep V at the front, with the collar set into the neckline and the seam allowance clipped at the corner of the V.

Collar: Two collar parts, each sewn double and turned right side out; the right lower end is laid over the left and the ends are joined before the collar is attached, so they cross at the centre front.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves.

Front: One piece cut on the fold.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on an overlocker; hems of the body and sleeves turned up 2 cm and topstitched with a twin needle or a coverstitch machine.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pattern pieces and straight seams; the only careful step is crossing the collar ends and setting the collar into the V corner.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • None: no zipper, buttons or interfacing are used

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance for the garment and sleeves – 2 cm, other allowances - 1.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch shoulder seams. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  2. Fold collars right sides together and stitch the outer edge. Turn collars right side out and press. Overlap the right lower of the collar onto the left and secure along the lower edges. Attach the collar to the neckline, clipping the allowance at the corner. Overlock allowances and press towards the main garment.
  3. Stitch side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Stitch sleeve seam, press allowances and overlock. Set sleeves into armholes, press allowances and overlock.
  5. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and sleeves, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
