Ease is the difference between body measurements and finished garment measurements. Without it most garments would be unwearable; with too much, they look shapeless. Controlling ease deliberately is how a drafter dials in both comfort and silhouette, and it is one of the most misunderstood concepts in pattern making.
There are two distinct kinds, and conflating them causes fit problems. Wearing ease keeps the garment functional; design ease creates the intended look.
Wearing ease: room to move and breathe
Wearing ease is the minimum amount added so the wearer can move, sit and breathe. A bodice needs a few centimeters at the bust just to be comfortable and allow the arm to reach forward. Without wearing ease even a perfectly drafted garment would strain at the seams.
Wearing ease is largely fixed by anatomy and activity, not by fashion. It is the non-negotiable comfort allowance built into every block.
Design ease: the silhouette decision
Design ease is the additional fullness added on top of wearing ease to achieve a style, from a close-fitting sheath to an oversized coat. A relaxed shirt might carry generous design ease at the bust and hip; a tailored bodice almost none. This is where aesthetic intent lives.
Two garments built from the same block can look entirely different purely through the design ease chosen, even though both are comfortable to wear.
Typical ease ranges by fit
- Fitted: minimal design ease, close to the body, small bust ease.
- Semi-fitted: moderate ease that skims the figure.
- Loose: noticeable design ease for a relaxed drape.
- Oversized: large design ease that ignores body shaping for effect.
Pro tip
Ease requirements also depend on fabric. A rigid woven needs more wearing ease than a fabric with stretch, which can use negative ease.
Negative ease and stretch fabrics
When a fabric stretches, the garment can be drafted smaller than the body so it grips. This is negative ease, used for swimwear, activewear and knit bodysuits. The amount of negative ease is matched to the stretch percentage of the fabric, so a four-way stretch knit allows far more than a low-stretch jersey.
Drafting negative ease onto a pattern intended for woven fabric will simply make a garment that does not fit, so ease and fabric choice are inseparable decisions.
Distributing ease around the pattern
Total ease is rarely spread evenly. A bodice may carry more ease across the back to allow forward arm movement and less at the front. Sleeve cap ease is eased into the armhole to shape the cap without puckers. Thoughtful distribution is what separates a garment that fits from one that merely has the right total circumference.
