Tech. Description

Mock Wrap Dress with Collar and Front Tie

A women's mock-wrap dress in knit fabric, below the knee, with a waist seam, crossover upper fronts with pleats at the waist and a pointed collar around the V-neck. Three-quarter set-in sleeves; a tie belt stitched into the left side seam wraps the waist and ties at the side.

When To Wear

  • Office days in autumn and spring, with court shoes or ankle boots.
  • Dinners and family occasions, with heeled shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted crossover bodice joined at the waist to a flared skirt.

Length: Below the knee; hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Collar: Pointed collar of upper and under collar, the upper collar interfaced; the under collar is turned under and topstitched over the neckline seam.

Neckline: V-neck formed by the crossover fronts; the front edges below the collar notch are overlocked, turned in and topstitched.

Front: Two upper fronts with pleats stitched at the waist. The right front laps over the left, both are caught into the waist seam, so the wrap is fixed and the dress pulls on with no fastening.

Sleeves: Three-quarter set-in sleeves, hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Back: Upper back with a centre back seam, lower back cut on the fold.

Waist: Waist seam on front and back. The tie belt is a folded strip stitched closed, attached to the left side seam.

Skirt: Flared, lower front and lower back each cut in one piece on the fold.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A collar set into a V-neck, matching the pleats of the overlapped fronts at the waist seam, and working with knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible knit interfacing (upper collar)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Upper Back – 2 pieces
  • Lower Back – 1 piece on the fold
  • Upper Front – 2 pieces
  • Lower Front – 1 piece on the fold
  • Collar – 2 pieces
  • Waistband (tie belt) – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • Tip: Knit pieces are sewn with a special stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim the seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also sew the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread serger.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse fusible interfacing to the upper collar.
  2. On the Upper Front pieces, fold and stitch the pleats along the marked lines. At the notch on the neckline, clip the seam allowance; serge the neckline edge from the notch down to the lower edge, turn it to the inside and topstitch.
  3. Stitch the center back seam of the Upper Back. Serge and press.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams, press the seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  5. Stitch the ends and outer edge of the Collar, starting and ending the stitching exactly at the marked neckline seam line. Turn the collar right side out and press. Stitch the upper collar to the neckline. Turn under the seam allowance of the under collar and topstitch it over the seam.
  6. Stitch the Lower Back to the Upper Back, press the seam allowances downwards and serge.
  7. Lap the right front over the left front, matching the pleats closest to the side seam. Stitch the Lower Front to the Upper Front. Press the seam allowances downwards and serge.
  8. Stitch the side seams. Serge and press the seams towards the back.
  9. Stitch the sleeve seams. Serge and press.
  10. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches. Serge and press the seams.
  11. Serge the hem edge of the dress and the lower edge of the sleeves. Turn to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
  12. Fold the Waistband in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch, leaving a 15 cm turning opening on the long side. Turn right side out and press. Stitch the opening closed. Stitch the tie belt to the left side seam.
