Tech. Description

Dolman Sleeve Belted Blouse

A women's boxy pull-on top in knit fabric with short dolman sleeves cut in one with the body, a round neck and a doubled band at the hem. A narrow leather belt runs through self-fabric belt loops just above the band.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with straight trousers, jeans or a pencil skirt.
  • Over a fitted long-sleeved knit top in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Wide and boxy through the shoulders and body, drawn in at the hip by the band.

Length: Hip length, finished with the band.

Neckline: Round, finished with an interfaced facing sewn into a ring and topstitched 1 cm from the neck edge.

Sleeves: Dolman, cut in one with the front and back. The side seams are sewn from a notch downwards; above the notch the edges are serged, turned in and topstitched to form the sleeve openings.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, no closure.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Waist: Hem band sewn into a ring, folded in half lengthwise and attached to the lower edge, with its seam at the left side seam. Belt loops are topstitched on along the markings for a 2 cm wide leather belt.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two main pieces cut on the fold, a neck facing, a folded hem band and belt loops, sewn in knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible knit interfacing (front and back neck facings)
  • Leather belt, 2 cm wide

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Back – 1 piece on fold
    2. Front – 1 piece on fold
    3. Trim strip – 1 piece
    4. Back neck facing – 1 piece
    5. Front neck facing – 1 piece
    6. Belt loop – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    1. Back neck facing – 1 piece
    2. Front neck facing – 1 piece

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also sew pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse fusible interfacing to the back neck facing and front neck facing pieces.
  2. Stitch the shoulder seams of the back and front. Serge the seam allowances and press them towards the back.
  3. Stitch the neck facing pieces into a loop. Press and serge the seam allowances, serge the outer edge. Fold the facing with the garment right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Press the seam allowances, clip curves, turn the facing to the wrong side and topstitch onto the blouson 1 cm from the neckline edge.
  4. Clip the seam allowance at the notch on the side seams of the back and front. Stitch the side seams of the back and front from the notch downwards. Serge the seam allowances and press them towards the back.
  5. Serge the raw seam allowances of the side seams of the back and front, press them to the wrong side and topstitch.
  6. Stitch the trim strip piece into a loop, fold it in half lengthwise right sides together, and attach it to the bottom edge of the blouson. The trim strip seam is located at the left side seam of the blouson. Press and serge the seam allowances.
  7. Fold the belt loop in half lengthwise right sides together, align the edges, and stitch 0.5-0.7 cm from the long edge. Then turn it right side out, straighten the seam, positioning it on the fold, and press. Cut the belt loops to size and topstitch according to the markings. Insert a 2 cm wide leather strap.
