Tech. Description

Drawstring Top with Single Shoulder Tie

A sleeveless women's tunic top in knit fabric with a scoop neckline, a single tie on the left shoulder and a dropped seam at hip level carrying a drawstring casing. The lower part has side slits.

When To Wear

  • Summer days, with leggings, slim trousers or shorts.
  • As a light layer over a swimsuit or a vest top on holiday.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, loose upper body gathered by the drawstring at hip level; the lower part hangs straight.

Length: Tunic length, below the hip.

Neckline: Scoop neckline at front and back, finished with an all-in-one facing.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with the same facing.

Closure: Only the right shoulder is seamed; the left shoulder is cut as two tie ends that are knotted on the shoulder.

Waist: The upper and lower parts are joined at hip level with a separate folded casing caught in the seam; a cord is threaded through it and tied at the centre front.

Back: One piece above the hip seam and one piece below it.

Finishing: Neckline, armhole and tie edges topstitched 1 cm from the edge; side slits in the lower part, edges topstitched 0.3–0.5 cm from the fold; hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Few pieces and straight seams; the care points are the combined neckline-armhole-tie facing, the inserted casing and sewing knit fabric with a stretch or zigzag stitch.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with low to medium stretch, in natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Cord for the drawstring

Cutter's Must

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Lower front – 1 piece
  • Lower back – 1 piece
  • Back facing — 1 piece
  • Front facing — 1 piece

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics should be sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also sew pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the side seams of the back and front. Serge the seams and press them towards the back. Stitch the right shoulder seam. Serge the seam and press.
  2. Stitch the side and right shoulder seams of the facings. Serge the seams and press them towards the back. Serge the outer edge of the facings.
  3. Place the back and front pieces with the facing right sides together, align the edges, and stitch along the neckline, armhole, and tie edges. Turn the facings to the wrong side, press, and topstitch 1 cm from the edge.
  4. Serge the side edges of the lower back and front. Stitch the side seams of the lower pieces from the top to the notch. Press the seams open. Cut the drawstring casing. The dimensions of the drawstring casing are indicated on the lekala. Fold the drawstring casing in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Turn the short edges in by 2 cm. Place the upper and lower back and front pieces right sides in, insert the drawstring casing between them, aligning the notches and the edges of the drawstring casing. Stitch the pieces. Serge the seam and press it downwards.
  5. Serge the bottom edge of the sundress. Fold the edge inwards by 2 cm and topstitch. Along the slit, topstitch the seam allowances 0.3 - 0.5 cm from the fold.
