Tech. Description

Gathered Neck Three-Quarter Sleeve Jersey Top

A women's knit top cut in only two pattern pieces, with three-quarter kimono sleeves cut in one with the front and back. The sleeves are open along the top from the shoulder to the cuff, and the front neckline and sleeve hems are gathered and bound.

When To Wear

  • Spring and summer, with trousers, jeans or a straight skirt.
  • Under a cardigan or an open jacket in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose, straight body with sleeves cut in one with the front and back.

Length: Hip length; hem overlocked, turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Neckline: Wide round neckline, gathered on the front in the sections marked on the pattern and bound with knit binding.

Sleeves: Three-quarter kimono sleeves. The front and back sleeve edges are bound separately and meet only at a short shoulder section (back lapped over front and topstitched) and at the cuff, leaving an open slit along the top of the arm. The sleeve hem is gathered and bound.

Front: One piece cut on the fold.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hem topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Few seams, but much binding in knit fabric: the slit edges, the neckline and the gathered sleeve hems, plus a lapped shoulder seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit binding tape (or bias binding), 4 cm wide

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece on fold

Tip: When sewing knit fabrics, use a special elastic stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. Alternatively, you can sew the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Along the neckline edge of the Front, stitch with loose stitches and gather. The amount of gathering for each section is indicated on the pattern.
  2. Bind the edge of the front part of the sleeve from the notch to the sleeve hem with bias binding. Bind the edge of the back part of the sleeve from the neckline to the hem. Serge the shoulder seam allowance of the Front.
  3. Lap the shoulder seam section of the Back over the Front and topstitch it along the binding stitching line. Place the back part of the sleeve onto the front part, matching the notches at the sleeve hem. Stitch along the sleeve hem with loose stitches and gather; the amount of gathering for each section is indicated on the Back pattern. Bind the sleeve hem.
  4. Bind the neckline with bias binding. Stitch the center back seam. Serge the seam and press.
  5. Stitch the side seams of the Back and Front, stitching the underarm edges of the sleeves at the same time. Serge the seams and press towards the back.
  6. Serge the garment hem, fold up 2 cm and topstitch.
