Tech. Description

Gathered Dolman Blouse with Cowl Neck

A women's pull-on top in drapey knit fabric with short dolman sleeves, a softly draped front neckline and a doubled band at the hip. Front and back each have a centre insert between two side panels that are gathered along curved seams.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with slim trousers, jeans or a straight skirt.
  • For evenings out in a fluid jersey.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Wide through the shoulders and body, gathered into a fitted hip band.

Length: Hip length, including the band.

Neckline: Round, falling in soft folds at the front; the edge is serged, turned in and topstitched.

Sleeves: Dolman, cut in one with the side panels; the armhole edges are serged, turned in and topstitched.

Front: A centre front insert between two side fronts. Each side front is gathered from the lower notch to the shoulder, with the amount of gathering marked on the pattern, and joined to the insert along a curved seam.

Back: Built the same way as the front: a centre back insert between two gathered side backs.

Waist: Hem band of two pieces sewn into a ring, folded in half lengthwise; the lower edge of the body is gathered to fit it.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering to marked amounts along curved seams, a gathered hem attached to a folded band, and sewing drapey knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch that drapes well, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutter's Must

  • Back side – 2 pieces
  • Back insert – 1 piece
  • Front insert – 1 piece
  • Front side – 2 pieces
  • Lower – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.
