Tech. Description

Pleated Tunic Dress with Funnel Collar

A straight, above-the-knee women's dress in knit fabric, with short raglan sleeves and a high neck finished with a folded collar band that rolls over. Narrow pleats below the front neckline are stitched down to a marked point and released below; the sleeves end in folded cuffs and the hem in a folded band.

When To Wear

  • Everyday wear in spring and summer, with sandals or trainers.
  • Over leggings or slim trousers as a tunic in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight and loose, with bust darts on the front.

Length: Above the knee, finished with a hem band.

Collar: A single collar piece sewn into a ring, folded in half lengthwise and stitched to the neckline, with its seam at the left shoulder.

Front: Cut on the fold. A group of narrow pleats at the centre front neckline, stitched from the neckline to a mark, pressed towards the right side seam and topstitched from the right side.

Sleeves: Short raglan sleeves, the underarm and side seams sewn in one; folded cuffs sewn into a ring.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, no seams or darts.

Skirt: Lower front and lower back joined into a ring, folded in half and attached to the lower edge as a hem band.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker. No fastenings.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Raglan seams and folded bands in knit fabric; the only detail needing care is stitching and topstitching the neckline pleats evenly.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • No notions: the dress has no fastenings or interfacing.

Cutter's Must

  • Back – 1 piece on fold
  • Lower Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece on fold
  • Lower Front – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • Cuff – 2 pieces
  • Collar – 1 piece

Tip: When sewing knit fabrics, use a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. Topstitch the hem allowance with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. Alternatively, you can sew the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the bust darts on the Front. Cut open the dart folds, serge and press.
  2. Form pleats according to markings, stitch them from the neckline to the mark, press pleat depths towards the right side seam, and topstitch from the right side.
  3. Attach the sleeve to the back, press and serge seam allowances. Attach the sleeve to the front, press and serge seam allowances. Stitch the underarm sleeve seams and side seams in one continuous seam. Press and serge seam allowances.
  4. Stitch the collar into a loop. Press the collar in half lengthwise with the right side out and attach it to the neckline of the back and front. The collar seam should sit on the left side, at the shoulder seam. Press and serge seam allowances.
  5. Stitch the cuff into a loop, press it in half lengthwise with the right side out, and attach it to the lower edge of the sleeve. Press and serge seam allowances.
  6. Stitch the Lower Back and Lower Front together into a loop. Press this hem band in half lengthwise with the right side out and attach it to the lower edge of the dress. Press and serge seam allowances.
