Tech. Description

Knit Blouson Top With Waistband

A women's loose top in knit fabric, with short sleeves cut in one with the body, a round neckline finished with a topstitched facing, and a tie belt threaded through four bound slits at the front and back.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with trousers, jeans or straight skirts.
  • Over a slip dress or a fitted top.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and boxy, drawn in at the lower part by the tie belt.

Length: To the high hip.

Neckline: Wide round neckline with interfaced front and back facings, topstitched 1 cm from the overlocked edge.

Sleeves: Short, cut in one with the front and back, with turned and topstitched hems.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, no opening.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Waist: Interfaced belt, folded and topstitched 0.1 cm around its edge, threaded through four slits (two on the front, two on the back) and tied at the front. The slits are faced with interfaced 4 × 8 cm rectangles, worked like a welt pocket opening, and edge-stitched.

Finishing: Hems turned and topstitched with a twin needle to keep the stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Only a front and a back, a neck facing and a belt; the faced slits need careful marking and cutting.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with low to medium stretch, of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible knit interfacing (neck facings, belt, slit facings)
  • Twin needle

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Back – 1 piece on fold
    2. Front – 1 piece on fold
    3. Waistband – 1 piece
    4. Back neckline facing – 1 piece
    5. Front neckline facing – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    1. Back neckline facing – 1 piece
    2. Front neckline facing – 1 piece
    3. Waistband – 1 piece

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the back and front neckline FACINGs and the waistband with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the back and front. Serge the seam allowances and press them towards the back.
  3. Stitch the neckline facing pieces into a loop. Serge and press the seam allowances, serge the outer edge. Place the facing on the garment with right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Press the seam allowances, clip curves, turn the facing to the wrong side and topstitch onto the blouson 1 cm from the serged edge.
  4. Serge the seam allowances of the blouson's bottom edges and SLEEVEs, fold them to the wrong side and topstitch.
  5. Fold the waistband piece in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long side and one short side. Turn the waistband right side out, fold the unstitched seam allowances inwards, and topstitch 0.1 cm from the edge around the perimeter of the waistband.
  6. Cut four 4x8 cm rectangles from the main fabric. Reinforce them with fusible interfacing, serge around the perimeter. Place them right side down on the slit markings and stitch along the markings. Cut the fabric between the stitches as you would for a welt pocket. Make diagonal cuts 1 - 1.5 cm from the short sides. Turn the facing to the wrong side through the resulting opening, straighten the edges. Topstitch along the edge of the opening to secure it.
