Cap Shoulder V-Neck Dress with Waist Tabs

A women's fitted sheath dress with no waist seam, a wide V-neckline, cap shoulders formed by separate pleated straps, a centre front seam with bust darts, and buttoned tabs in contrast fabric at the sides of the waist. Invisible zip and vent at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • Office wear in autumn and spring, on its own or under a jacket.
  • Daytime events and dinners, with court shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted sheath shaped by darts on the front and back and by back princess seams.

Neckline: Wide V-neckline finished with interfaced front and back facings, understitched at the back 0.2 cm from the seam.

Sleeves: Sleeveless with cap shoulders: a separate strap with a folded pleat is stitched to the back along the shoulder seam and to the front below the shoulder, extending past the shoulder point. Armholes finished with interfaced facings.

Front: Centre front seam pressed open; bust darts pressed downwards and long waist darts pressed towards the centre front.

Back: Centre back pieces with darts and princess seams from the armhole to the hem joining the side backs, which meet the fronts at the side seams.

Closure: Invisible zip in the centre back seam.

Skirt: Straight, with a vent at the centre back hem pressed onto the left back and topstitched across its upper edge.

Finishing: Two interfaced tabs in contrast fabric, topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge, are attached at the waist on the marked lines and held with buttons: the drawing shows the tab ends at the front darts and at the back princess seams. Hem turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Pleated cap-shoulder straps set between front and back, combined neck and armhole facings, an invisible zip above a vent and a dart-shaped bodice with no waist seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine wool fabrics with added synthetic fibres; contrast fabric for the tabs.

Fabric & Materials

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical details). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!
