Tech. Description

Blouse with Shoulder Yoke

A women's blouse in fine sheer fabric with a deep round yoke that runs over the shoulders and joins the body and the gathered sleeve heads. Small pleats at the front neckline, full long sleeves shirred with elastic above a frilled edge, and a button-and-loop opening at the back neck.

When To Wear

  • Spring and summer, with trousers, jeans or a straight skirt.
  • Daytime events and dinners, worn over a camisole if the fabric is sheer.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, loose body with waist darts on the front and back.

Length: Hip length, hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Yoke: Round yoke cut as one front yoke and two back yokes; the back yokes are shaped with shoulder darts. The body and the sleeves are joined first along the armhole line, then the gathered sleeve heads, front and back are stitched to the yoke in one seam pressed upwards.

Neckline: Round neckline, small pleats folded into the front yoke at the neck; finished with bias binding with no seam allowance on the neck edge.

Sleeves: Long, full sleeves gathered into the yoke. Hat elastic is stitched on the inside with a zigzag stitch above the wrist, leaving a frill below; the sleeve edge is finished with a rolled hem. Underarm and side seams are stitched in one pass.

Back: Centre back seam with an opening at the neck, closed with one button and a loop formed from the neck binding.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Joining gathered sleeves, body and a curved yoke in one seam, shirring with elastic and binding a neckline in sheer fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine, sheer fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the waist darts on the Back and Front. Press the darts towards the center of each piece.
  2. Stitch the shoulder darts on the Back Yoke. Press the darts towards the center back seam.
  3. On the Front Yoke, fold the small pleats along the marked lines at the neckline and baste them in place 0.5 cm from the neckline edge.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Back Yoke and Front Yoke. Overlock the seam and press it towards the back.
  5. Stitch the Sleeves to the Back and Front along the armhole line. Overlock the seams and press them towards the sleeve. Sew a line of loose gathering stitches along the upper edge of each sleeve and gather it.
  6. Stitch the yokes to the Back, Front and Sleeves. Overlock the seam and press it upwards.
  7. Mark the elastic placement line on the Sleeves. Place each sleeve wrong side up, stretch the hat elastic and stitch it on with a zigzag stitch, leaving 1 cm free at the ends.

  9. Stitch the center back seam from the opening mark downwards. Press the seam open and overlock.
