Tech. Description

Paneled Flared Skirt with Yoke and Contrast Hem

A women's flared six-panel skirt with a shaped, faced hip yoke instead of a waistband, a separately cut flounce at the hem and an invisible zip in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • Office and daytime wear with a tucked-in blouse or a fitted knit top.
  • Spring and summer, with sandals or low-heeled shoes; in autumn with tights and boots.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the yoke, flaring from the hip to the hem.

Waist: Shaped yoke at front and back with no waistband. The outer yokes are interfaced; the inner yokes face the top edge, are understitched 0.2 cm from the seam, attached to the zip tapes and stitched in the ditch of the yoke seam.

Skirt: Front and back each made of a centre panel and two side panels, seams pressed towards the centre panel.

Closure: Invisible zip in the left side seam.

Finishing: A flounce cut in two pieces is joined into a ring and stitched to the lower edge of the skirt; its hem is overlocked, turned up 1 cm and topstitched. The drawing shows the flounce in a contrast colour.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight panel seams and an invisible zip; the faced yoke has to be finished neatly around the zip.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics made from natural fibres or natural fibres blended with synthetic ones.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (outer yokes)
  • Invisible zip
  • Contrast fabric for the flounce, if wanted

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Center Part – 2 pieces
    2. Side Part – 4 pieces
    3. Yoke – 4 pieces
    4. Flounce – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    1. Yoke – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to two of the yoke pieces (outer yokes).
  2. Stitch the center parts to the side parts. Overlock the seam allowances and press them towards the center part.
  3. Stitch the interfaced yoke pieces to the skirt. Overlock the seam allowances and press upwards.
  4. Stitch and overlock the right side seam of the skirt. Press the seam towards the back. Stitch the left side seam from the zipper notch downwards. Press the seam open, pressing the zipper allowances, and overlock. Place the invisible zipper under the seam allowances and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
  5. Stitch the flounce pieces together. Overlock and press the seams. Stitch the flounce to the lower edge of the skirt. Overlock the seam allowances and press upwards. Overlock the lower edge of the flounce, fold up 1 cm and topstitch. Press the seam.
  6. Stitch the non-interfaced yoke pieces (inner yokes) along the right side seam. Overlock this seam, as well as the open side edges and the lower edge of the inner yokes. Press the seams. Place the skirt and the inner yokes right sides together and stitch along the upper edge. Understitch the seam allowances onto the inner yoke 0.2 cm from the seam. Turn the inner yokes to the wrong side and press. Stitch the open side edges to the zipper seam allowances. Topstitch the inner yokes into the outer yoke attachment seam and press.
