Tech. Description

Bubble Hem Dress

A women's sleeveless trapeze dress with a round neckline, curved seams on the front running from the neckline to the side seams, and a bubble hem made by gathering the dress fabric onto the lining hem. Fully lined, invisible zip at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • Summer days and holidays, with sandals or flat shoes.
  • Daytime parties and dinners; in cooler weather over a fine knit or under a cropped cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Trapeze: no darts and no waist seam, widening from the bust to the hem.

Length: About knee length, with the lower edge rounded into a bubble.

Neckline: Round neckline, faced by the lining.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes faced by the lining, stitched in two steps (front, then back) so the dress can be turned through.

Front: Centre front seam pressed open, and side front panels set in with curved seams from the neckline to the side seams, allowances pressed towards the side panels.

Back: Centre back seam with an invisible zip in its upper part.

Skirt: The lower edge of the dress is lightly gathered and stitched to the lining hem right sides together, pulled through the zip opening of the lining; the lining holds the gathered edge under to form the bubble.

Lining: Full lining cut from the same pieces as the dress, slipstitched to the zip tape.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Bagging a sleeveless dress with a full lining, turning it through the back opening, and joining a gathered hem to the lining.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics made from natural or blended fibres; lining fabric.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center back seam from the mark downwards. Press the seam open, pressing the seam allowances for the zipper.
  2. Place the zipper under the seam allowances so that the teeth are not visible, and stitch it in place.
  3. Stitch the Side Front to the Front. Press the seam allowances towards the Side Front. Stitch the center front seam. Press the seam allowances open.
  4. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the dress. Press the shoulder and side seams towards the back.
  5. Stitch the lining pieces similarly to the main fabric pieces. Place the lining and the dress right sides together and stitch the neckline, clip the seam allowances at the curves.
  6. Stitch the armhole in two steps: the front section from the shoulder seam to the side seam, then the back section from the shoulder seam to the side seam. Clip the seam allowances at the curves. Turn the dress right side out, baste and press the neckline and armholes.
  7. Run a line of long, loose stitches along the lower edge of the main-fabric dress and gather it slightly. Pull the lower edges through the unstitched zipper opening of the lining, place the lower edges of the dress and lining right sides together, match them and stitch the hem.
  8. Turn the dress right side out and slipstitch the lining's zipper-opening allowances to the zipper tape.
