Moto Jacket Asymmetrical Zipper Contrast Panels

A women's cropped, fully lined moto jacket with an off-centre separating zipper, a stand collar, princess-seamed panels in a second fabric and zip pockets in the side front panels.

When To Wear

  • In spring and autumn over a T-shirt or blouse, with jeans or a straight skirt.
  • Over a fitted dress or knit top as a short outer layer.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted, shaped by front and back princess seams.

Length: Cropped to the high hip, the fronts ending in points.

Collar: Two-piece stand collar in the second fabric, set between the jacket and the facings; the upper corner of the right front turns back as a small lapel showing the facing.

Closure: Separating zipper set diagonally off-centre: the left half is topstitched onto the left front along the marking, the right half is sewn into the right front edge. Front edge and lapel topstitched 0.5–0.7 cm from the edge.

Front: Centre front with a front yoke at the shoulder and a side front panel; side fronts, yokes, collar and facings cut from the second fabric.

Pockets: Zip pockets in the side front panels: a slashed opening turned to the inside with the zipper topstitched behind it, teeth visible.

Sleeves: Long, two-piece (upper and lower sleeve), set-in.

Back: Centre back seam, shoulder darts and princess seams with side back panels in the second fabric.

Finishing: Garment and sleeve hems 3.5 cm, faced by the lining.

Lining: Full lining including sleeves, bagged out through an opening in the right sleeve lining.

Level Of Difficulty

Advanced. Many panels to match, two zip pockets, an asymmetrical separating zipper with a turned-back lapel, a stand collar set between shell and facing, and a bagged lining.

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance for the bottom of the garment and sleeve hem – 3.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

Place the facings on the jacket right sides together and stitch along the front edges, the neckline (with the Stand Collar sandwiched between the facing and the jacket) and the lower front corners. Clip the curves, trim the corners and turn right side out. Topstitch along the front edge and lapel 0.5–0.7 cm from the edge.
  9. Stitch the elbow seam of the sleeve (Upper Sleeve to Lower Sleeve), press the seam allowances open. Press up the sleeve hem. Stitch the front sleeve seam, press the seam allowances open. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches.
  10. On the lining pieces, stitch the seams and set in the sleeves, leaving an opening in the front seam of the right sleeve. Press the lining seam allowances.
  11. Attach the lining to the Center Front Facings and the Back Neckline Facing, press the seam allowances. Turn right side out and straighten the seams.
  12. Mark and press up the jacket hem. Stitch the lining to the sleeve hems and the jacket hem. Turn the jacket right side out through the opening in the sleeve lining. Stitch the opening closed.
