Tech. Description

Two-Tone Kimono Sleeve Top

A women's knit top in two colours with long kimono sleeves cut in one with the upper front and upper back. A curved seam divides the contrast upper part from the lower body on the front and on the back.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring with jeans, trousers or a straight skirt.
  • For everyday wear on its own or under an open jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, relaxed body with dropped kimono shoulders.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: Round neckline bound with a 4 cm bias strip of the contrast fabric, folded to a narrow binding. The neck is bound while the left shoulder is still open, then the left shoulder seam is closed.

Sleeves: Long kimono sleeves cut in one with the upper front and upper back, with a seam along the top of the arm; underarm and side seams are sewn in one pass. Sleeve edges are bound like the neckline.

Front: Upper front and lower front, each cut on the fold, joined by a curved seam pressed upwards.

Back: Upper back and lower back, each cut on the fold, joined by a curved seam.

Finishing: 2 cm hem allowance, serged, turned and topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pieces and no fastenings. Care is needed with stretch stitches and with binding the neckline and sleeve edges in knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, in natural or blended fibres, in two coordinating colours.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for the hem

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2 cm. Neckline and sleeve hem allowance – 0 cm. First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Lower Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Front – 1 piece on fold
  • From contrast fabric (fabric 1):
    • Upper Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Upper Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Bias strips, 4 cm wide, for binding the neckline and sleeve edges

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Join the Upper Front to the Lower Front. Serge the seam and press it upwards.
  2. Join the Upper Back to the Lower Back. Serge the seam and press it upwards.
  3. Stitch the right shoulder and overarm seam. Serge the allowance and press it towards the back.
  4. Cut a fabric strip (from fabric 1) at a 45-degree angle, 4 cm wide. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise and press. Unfold the piece, fold the long raw edges to the center and press again. Bind the neckline with the binding strip. Stitch the left shoulder and overarm seam. Serge the allowance and press it towards the back.
  5. Stitch the side seams and underarm sleeve seams in one pass, press the allowances towards the back and serge. Bind the sleeve edges using a method similar to the neckline treatment.
  6. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, press it to the wrong side and topstitch.
