Tech. Description

Crossover Shawl Collar Tunic

A women's pull-on knit tunic with a crossover shawl collar set into a cut-out in the front neckline and fixed with two buttons, a one-piece front flaring towards the hem and long set-in sleeves.

When To Wear

  • In autumn, winter and spring, over leggings, slim trousers or jeans.
  • For everyday and office wear in place of a blouse or jumper.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the shoulders and bust, widening from below the collar to a flared hem. For knit fabric with medium stretch.

Length: Tunic length, below the hip.

Collar: Shawl collar of four pieces, two of them interfaced, sewn in pairs and turned. The right side overlaps the left, the overlapped ends are stitched into the lower edge of the front cut-out, and two buttons are sewn through all collar layers. At the back the collar is set into the neckline, clipped at the corners.

Closure: No opening; the tunic is pulled on over the head. The two buttons are decorative.

Sleeves: Long, straight, one-piece set-in sleeves, set into the open armhole before the side seams and sleeve seams are stitched in one pass.

Front: One piece, without darts or seams.

Back: Two pieces joined by a centre back seam.

Finishing: Hems of the body and sleeves overlocked, turned up 1.5 cm and topstitched, with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Few pieces and straight knit seams; the only careful step is setting the turned collar into the front cut-out and clipping the back neckline corners.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit fusible interfacing (collar)
  • 2 buttons

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance for the garment bottom, sleeve hem – 1.5 cm, other seams 0.8 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 4 pieces
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Collar – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the allowances and press to the left side.
  2. Fuse interfacing to the Collar pieces. Stitch the Collar pieces together in pairs. Fold the collar right sides together and stitch along the outer edge. Turn the collar right side out, press. Overlap the right collar over the left and secure along the bottom edge.
  3. Stitch the collar to the Front, press and overlock the allowances.
  4. Stitch shoulder seams, press and overlock allowances.
  5. Insert the collar into the back neckline, clipping at the corners, press and overlock allowances.
  6. Set sleeves into open armholes, matching notches, press and overlock allowances. Stitch sleeve seams simultaneously with side seams, press and overlock allowances.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and the sleeve hem, fold to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
  8. Sew the buttons on through all layers of the collar.
