Tech. Description

Asymmetric Color Block Top

A women's knit top in three colours with dropped shoulders and long sleeves. A diagonal seam from the neckline to the hem divides the front into two colours, and a triangular inset in a third colour sits at the lower front.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring with jeans, trousers or a straight skirt.
  • For everyday wear on its own or under an open cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Relaxed fit with dropped shoulders.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: Wide round neckline, overlocked, turned to the inside and topstitched; the diagonal front seam meets it off-centre.

Front: Right front in contrast fabric 1; left front in the main fabric with a triangular front inset in contrast fabric 2 joined across its lower part.

Sleeves: Long sleeves set into the open armholes; sleeve seams and side seams are sewn in one pass.

Back: One piece in the main fabric, cut on the fold.

Finishing: 0.8 cm seam allowances; 2 cm hem allowance on the body and sleeves, turned and topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Five pieces, no fastenings and flat sleeve insertion. Care is needed matching the colour-block seams and using stretch stitches.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, in natural or blended fibres, in three contrasting colours.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle or coverstitch machine for the hems

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance, sleeve hem allowance – 2 cm, other seams 0.8 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Left Front – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • From contrasting fabric 1:
    • Right Front – 1 piece
  • From contrasting fabric 2:
    • Front Inset – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

  1. Stitch the Front Inset to the Left Front. Overlock the allowance and press it down.
  2. Stitch the right shoulder seam. Overlock the allowance and press it towards the back. Overlock the neckline allowance of the Right Front and the Back. Fold the allowance inwards and topstitch.
  3. Stitch the Left Front to the Right Front. Overlock the allowance, simultaneously overlocking the left side of the neckline. Stitch the left shoulder seam, overlock the allowance. Fold the allowance of the left neckline inwards and topstitch.
  4. Set the sleeves into the open armholes, press and overlock the allowances. Stitch the sleeve seams simultaneously with the side seams, press and overlock the allowances.
  5. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and the bottom edge of the sleeve, fold to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
