Tech. Description

T-shirt with Curved Yoke

A women's short-sleeved T-shirt for knit fabric in two colours. The front has a curved yoke above the bust; the back has an open cut-out under a separate back yoke, gathered at the centre by a fabric loop.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with jeans, trousers or skirts.
  • Under an open jacket or cardigan, where the contrast yoke shows at the neckline.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body, with bust darts below the front yoke.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: Round neckline, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves in the second colour, hems turned up and topstitched.

Front: Body cut on the fold from the first colour; curved front yoke from the second colour, with the seam pressed towards the yoke.

Back: Body cut on the fold, with its neckline turned and topstitched. A separate back yoke with a topstitched lower edge lies over it and is joined only at the shoulders and armholes, leaving an open cut-out between them. A narrow strap is wrapped around the yoke at the centre back and stitched into a loop, gathering the yoke.

Finishing: Seams stretch-stitched or overlocked; hems topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight knit seams and topstitched hems; the only details are the yoke seam, the layered back yoke and the strap loop.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabric in two colours, of natural or blended fibres: one colour for the front and back, the other for the yokes, sleeves and strap.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric-1:
    1. Back – 1 piece on fold
    2. Front – 1 piece on fold
  • From main fabric-2:
    1. Back Yoke – 1 piece
    2. Front Yoke – 1 piece
    3. Sleeve – 2 pieces
    4. Strap – 1 piece

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics should be sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also sew the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark and stitch the darts on the front. Press the dart depths upwards. Attach the yoke to the front. Overlock the seams and press them towards the yoke.
  2. Overlock, fold, and topstitch the back neckline. Overlock, fold, and topstitch the lower edge of the back yoke. Place the back with the yoke, aligning the shoulder seams and armhole seams. Secure the pieces together.
  3. Stitch the shoulder and side seams, overlock, and press towards the back.
  4. Stitch the sleeve seam, overlock, and press. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Overlock the seam and press.
  5. Overlock the lower edge of the garment, the neckline edge, and the lower edge of the sleeve. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  6. Fold the strap in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch. Turn the piece right side out and press. Wrap the strap around the back yoke and stitch the strap into a loop. From the wrong side, attach the strap to the back yoke.
