Asymmetrical Button Front Sleeveless A-Line Dress

A sleeveless women's A-line dress with an off-centre front opening, front and back yokes, princess seams on the bodice, a waist seam and curved pockets at the top of the skirt. Five buttons, two of them hidden on the skirt.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, or in spring and autumn over a fine blouse or with a cardigan.
  • To the office and for daytime events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice with a flared A-line skirt.

Length: Below the knee.

Neckline: Round, finished with front facings and a back neck facing.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with folded bias binding, turned inside and topstitched.

Front: Yoke, bust darts and princess seams on the upper front. The opening is set off the centre line and runs to the hem.

Closure: Three buttons and buttonholes on the bodice; on the skirt, two buttonholes on the left front close onto inner buttons on the right front, so they are not visible.

Pockets: Curved pockets cut into the lower front at the waist seam, with pocket bags; the side piece forms the back of each pocket.

Back: Yoke, princess seams on the upper back, waist seam and a centre back seam through the bodice and skirt.

Waist: Horizontal waist seam at front and back, allowances pressed upwards.

Finishing: 3 cm hem, turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Many bodice pieces to match at the yokes, princess seams and waist, faced pocket openings, bias-bound armholes and a buttoned front with hidden buttons on the skirt.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front facings, back neck facing)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance – 3 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!
