Tech. Description

Sleeveless Stand Collar Side Split Blouse

A sleeveless women's top in knit fabric with a folded stand collar, a separate side panel joining front and back below the armholes, and a bound back neck slit closed with one button and a rouleau loop.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with straight trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • Over a fitted long-sleeve knit top in cooler weather, since the sides are open below the side panels.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, boxy body; front and back are each cut in one piece on the fold.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Collar: Stand collar folded in half lengthwise, sewn to the neckline and topstitched into the seam from the inside.

Sleeves: Sleeveless. The armhole and the side edges of front and back are finished with a folded facing.

Back: A slit at the centre back neck, finished with a 5 cm wide bias binding, closed with one button and a bias rouleau loop set into the end of the collar.

Sides: One side panel, hemmed at its upper and lower edges, is stitched to the front and back in one continuous line from the back hem, round the armhole, to the front hem. Below the panel the sides are left open.

Finishing: Hem turned up and topstitched; a twin needle or coverstitch keeps the stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Few pieces, but the side panel is joined in one long seam through the facing, and the back slit is bound with bias tape on knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabric made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • 1 button

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    • Back - 1 piece on fold
    • Front - 1 piece on fold
    • Side - 1 piece
    • Collar - 1 piece
    • Armhole facing – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch shoulder seams. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  2. Fold the facing in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the corners. Trim allowances, turn right side out, and press.
  3. Overlock the upper and lower edges of the side parts. Fold allowances inwards and topstitch.
  4. Place the main and the facing right sides together and secure them. Lay the facing and the top onto the side and stitch in one continuous line starting from the bottom of the back, along the armhole, to the bottom of the front. Overlock allowance and press.
  5. Make a slit on the back. Cut a bias strip for finishing the back slit, equal to twice the slit length + 4 cm and 5 cm wide. Press the bias strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Mark the slit line on the back, cut it. Lay the back flat along the slit line, place the bias strip on the right side, aligning the edges, and stitch. The seam width along the slit length is 0.5 – 0.7 cm, decreasing to 0.2 cm at the bottom of the slit. Fold the bias strip to the wrong side, enclosing the seam, and topstitch into the stitching line.
  6. Cut a bias strip 2.5 cm wide and 10 cm long for the loop. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch 0.3 cm from the fold. Trim allowances close to the stitching, turn the strip right side out, and straighten the loop. Adjust the loop length.
  7. Fold the collar in half lengthwise and stitch the short edges, inserting the loop. Turn the collar right side out and press. Stitch the outer side of the collar into the neckline. Fold the allowance of the upper collar inwards and topstitch into the stitching line.
  8. Overlock the hem allowance, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
