Tech. Description

Boat Neck Tie Front Top

A short women's top with a wide boat neckline finished with a double facing, cut-on short sleeves and a hip band. A tie sewn into the front band is pulled through an opening in the band and knotted at the front, off-centre.

When To Wear

  • In summer, with jeans, shorts or a midi skirt.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan in spring.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose through the body, held in at the hip by the band; the tie draws the front into a diagonal fold.

Length: Short, ending at the band around the high hip.

Neckline: Wide boat neckline. An outer facing is sewn to the right side as a visible band, then an inner interfaced facing is sewn on and topstitched into the seam.

Sleeves: Short, cut in one with the front and back; the sleeve seam is sewn together with the side seam; 2 cm hem.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, joined to a two-layer front band with a shaped opening. An outer tie is caught into the lower edge of the band, an inner tie into the upper edge.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with an outer and an inner back band.

Finishing: Overlocked seams pressed towards the back. On knit fabric, seams are sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and the hems with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Few pieces, but the double neckline facing, the band with its opening and the ties caught into the band seams need precise stitching to the marks.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics with elastane of natural or blended fibres; low-stretch knit fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (back and front neckline facings)
  • Twin needle for hemming knit fabric

Sewing Instructions

Tip: Cut pieces from knitted fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When overlocking, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Stitch the back neckline facing to the back, press seam allowances towards the facing. Stitch the outer back waistband to the back, press seam allowances towards the waistband.
  3. Stitch the front neckline facing to the front, press seam allowances towards the facing.
  4. Fold the inner tie right sides together and stitch along the side edges. Clip seam allowances, trim corners, turn the tie right side out, straighten, and press. Fold the outer tie right sides together and stitch along the side edges. Clip seam allowances, trim corners, turn the tie right side out, straighten, and press.
  5. Fold the front waistband right sides together and stitch the lower edge, inserting the outer tie. Stitch the cutout of the front waistband. Clip seam allowances at the curves, turn the waistband right side out, straighten, and press.
  6. Place the front waistband over the inner tie and secure along the upper edge. Stitch the front waistband to the front, press and overlock seam allowances.
  7. Stitch shoulder seams, press seam allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Stitch shoulder seams of inner neckline facings, press seam allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place the garment with the facing right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Clip seam allowances at the curves, turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Topstitch the inner facing into the seam of the outer facing.
  9. Overlock the upper edge of the inner back waistband. Place the inner back waistband over the outer and stitch the lower edge. Start and end the stitch exactly at the marked side seam line. Stitch side seams simultaneously with the sleeve seam, inserting the front between the back and the inner back waistband, press seam allowances towards the back and overlock. Turn the waistband right side out and topstitch into the seam of the outer waistband.
  10. Overlock the lower edge of the sleeve, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
