Tech. Description

Paneled Sleeveless Dress with Pockets

A women's sleeveless dress with self-lined centre front and centre back panels lapped over the side panels and topstitched, a round neckline with a centre front slit, a low horizontal seam joining a strongly flared lower part, and two patch pockets.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, with sandals or flat shoes.
  • Over a thin top or T-shirt in spring and early autumn.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Trapeze shape: the upper part follows the body through the panels, the lower part flares widely.

Neckline: Round neckline with a narrow slit at centre front, faced by the inner layer of the centre panels.

Sleeves: Sleeveless. The armhole edges of the centre panels are faced by their inner layer; the upper armhole of the side panels is finished with bias binding 4 cm wide, folded in half and topstitched along the fold.

Front: Upper centre front cut in two layers on the fold, lapped over the upper side fronts with its edge on the topstitching line, and held with decorative topstitching.

Back: Built the same way as the front: a two-layer upper centre back lapped over the upper side backs and topstitched.

Skirt: Lower front and lower back each cut in one piece on the fold, joined to the upper part with a seam pressed downwards. The flare makes the hem fall in deep, uneven waves.

Pockets: Two patch pockets on the lower front, with the top edge turned and topstitched and the sides and bottom topstitched on.

Finishing: Side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back; hem overlocked, turned and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Self-faced panels with a clipped neckline slit, lapped topstitched panel seams, bias-bound armholes and a wide flared hem to turn evenly.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the shoulder seams of the outer and inner Upper Center Front and Upper Center Back pieces. Press seam allowances open. Place the outer and inner center pieces right sides together and stitch along the neckline and the front slit. Clip the seam allowance, notch into the corner, turn the inner layer to the wrong side and press.
  2. Stitch the armhole edges of the center pieces, first on the left side, then on the right side. Turn, shape the seams and press.
  3. Stitch the side seams of the Upper Side Front and Upper Side Back pieces. Overlock the seam allowances and press towards the back. Finish the upper part of the armhole: cut (if not using ready-made) bias binding 4 cm wide and equal in length to the armhole + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Place the binding on the right side along the armhole edge and stitch. Clip the seam allowances. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the garment. Press the seam.
  4. Overlock the panel edges of the Upper Side Front and Upper Side Back pieces. Lap the Upper Center Front over the Upper Side Front, aligning its edge with the topstitching line, and baste. Join the Upper Center Back and Upper Side Back in the same way. Topstitch along the marked lines.
  5. Overlock the Pocket edges. Fold under the top edge of the Pocket and topstitch. Place the Pockets on the Lower Front and topstitch along the side and bottom edges.
  6. Stitch the side seams of the Lower Front and Lower Back. Overlock the seam allowances and press towards the back. Stitch the upper and lower parts of the dress together. Overlock the seam allowance and press downwards.
  7. Overlock the hem edge. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side and topstitch.
