Tech. Description

Draped Asymmetrical Pointed Hem Skirt

A women's skirt on a straight waistband with an asymmetric pointed hem. A flared insert is joined to the skirt along a curved seam running diagonally across the front and round one side, and falls in points below the hem.

When To Wear

  • With a fitted top or a tucked-in blouse, so the waistband and the curved insert seam stay visible.
  • In spring and summer with flat sandals, or in autumn with ankle boots and tights.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting over the hips, with volume added by the flared insert on one side only.

Length: Asymmetric; the front panel and the insert both end in long points, the back is shorter on one side.

Waist: Straight waistband, interfaced, with the ends stitched and turned and the inner edge topstitched into the attaching seam.

Closure: Concealed zipper in the centre back seam and one button with a buttonhole on the waistband.

Skirt: One front panel, right and left back panels and a single insert piece. The insert seam is serged and pressed towards the insert.

Back: Centre back seam, stitched from the zipper mark to the hem and pressed open.

Finishing: The hem of the skirt and the lower edges of the insert are serged, turned under 2 cm and topstitched in one pass.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A long curved seam joining a flared insert, a concealed zipper, a waistband with a buttonhole, and a hem that runs round several points.

Fabric Recommendations

Dense skirt fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side.

  1. Fuse the waistband with fusible interfacing.
  2. Serge the center back edges separately. Stitch the seam from the zipper mark to the bottom. Press seam allowances open. Insert the concealed zipper.
  3. Stitch and serge the side seams, press seam allowances towards the back.
  4. Attach the insert to the skirt. Serge the allowance and press it towards the insert.
  5. Attach the outer side of the waistband to the upper edge of the skirt. Finish the ends of the waistband, trim seam allowances at the corners and turn out. Fold under the inner edge of the waistband and topstitch into the attaching seam. Press the waistband when finished.
  6. Mark and make the buttonhole. Sew on the button.
  7. Serge the bottom edge of the skirt, simultaneously with the bottom edges of the insert, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
