Tech. Description

A-Line Skirt with Asymmetrical Wrap Front

A women's A-line skirt below the knee with a mock-wrap front: one deep pleat, stitched down from the waist to a mark, forms an off-centre overlap that opens at the hem. Straight waistband with a button and a concealed zipper in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • For the office with a tucked-in blouse or a fitted knit top.
  • In autumn and spring with a jacket or cardigan and boots or pumps.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, flaring from the waist to the hem.

Length: Below the knee.

Front: One piece with a single pleat placed off-centre; the pleat is stitched from the waist to a horizontal mark on the right side, then falls free, so the folded edge looks like a wrap overlap at the hem.

Closure: Concealed zipper in the left side seam and one button with a buttonhole on the waistband.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no centre back seam.

Waist: Straight interfaced waistband, the inner edge folded under and stitched in the ditch of the attaching seam.

Finishing: Hem finished, pressed 2 cm to the wrong side and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pattern pieces, one stitched pleat, a concealed zipper, a waistband and a buttonhole.

Fabric Recommendations

Firm skirt fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (waistband)
  • 1 button
  • Concealed zipper

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Note! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side.

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Waistband – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Waistband – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Interface the waistband with fusible interfacing.
  2. Form the pleat on the front. Secure the pleat according to the technical drawing and stitch from the top to the horizontal mark on the right side.
  3. Finish the left side edges separately. Stitch the seam from the zipper mark to the bottom. Press seam allowances open. Insert the concealed zipper.
  4. Stitch and finish the right side edges, press seam allowances towards the back.
  5. Attach the outer side of the waistband to the upper edge of the skirt. Finish the ends of the waistband, trim seam allowances at the corners and turn out. Fold under the inner edge of the waistband and topstitch into the attaching seam. Press the waistband when finished.
  6. Mark and make the buttonhole. Sew on the button.
  7. Finish the bottom edge of the skirt, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
