Tech. Description

Knit Tie-Waist Dress

A women's knee-length pull-on dress in medium-stretch knit, with a waist seam front and back, short grown-on sleeves with turn-back cuffs, curved front pockets and a separate tie belt.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, with sandals or trainers.
  • For everyday wear and travel, belted or without the belt.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose bodice blousing over a waist seam, with a slightly tapered skirt below.

Length: About knee length.

Neckline: Round neck finished with a 4 cm bias strip folded in half and topstitched along the fold to the wrong side.

Sleeves: Short sleeves cut in one with the upper front and upper back, finished with a cuff sewn into a ring and turned back to the right side.

Pockets: Curved pockets in the lower front: the opening is faced with the pocket bag, and the bag is stitched to a separate front side piece.

Waist: Waist seam joining the upper and lower parts of both front and back. The self-fabric tie belt is not attached; it is topstitched 0.1 cm from the edge all round.

Back: Upper and lower back, each cut on the fold, with no centre back seam.

Finishing: Hem serged, turned up 2 cm and topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight knit seams, a bias-bound neckline and cuffs; the faced curved pockets are the only step that takes care.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding 4 cm wide, length of the neckline plus 5 cm (or cut it from the main fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance for the bottom of the garment – 2 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Upper Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Front Side – 2 pieces
    • Pocket Bag – 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Waistband (tie belt) – 1 piece on fold

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

  1. Stitch the Upper Back to the Lower Back, press allowances upwards and serge.
  2. Place each Pocket Bag and the Lower Front right sides together and stitch along the pocket opening. Clip the allowances, turn the pocket bag to the wrong side, and press. Place the Lower Front on the Front Side and stitch the edges of the pocket bag to the Front Side, serge the allowances. Baste the pieces together along the side and upper edges.
  3. Stitch the Upper Front to the Lower Front, press allowances upwards and serge.
  4. Stitch the right shoulder seam, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  5. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the neckline length + 5cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding along the neckline edge, right side, and stitch. Clip allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece. Press the seam.
  6. Stitch the left shoulder seam, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  7. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  8. Stitch the cuff into a loop, press allowances open. Fold the cuff in half lengthwise, right side out. Stitch the cuff to the wrong side of the sleeve edge, serge the allowances. Turn the cuff to the right side.
  9. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  10. Fold the Waistband (tie belt) in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch, leaving an opening on the long side for turning. Turn it right side out, straighten and press. Topstitch the belt around the perimeter 0.1 cm from the edge.
