Tech. Description

Dolman Sleeve Gathered V-Neck Dress

A knee-length women's dress in knit fabric with long dolman sleeves cut in one with the bodice, a gathered V-neck bound with knit tape, and a wide smooth waist yoke between the gathered bodice and the gathered skirt. A zip in the left side seam opens from the top of the yoke.

When To Wear

  • Autumn and spring, with ankle boots or court shoes.
  • Office days and family celebrations; the long sleeves make it wearable without a jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose bodice gathered into a fitted waist yoke; full gathered skirt.

Length: About knee length; hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Neckline: V-neck gathered along the edge in the sections marked on the pattern and bound with knit tape; the corner of the binding at the centre front seam is stitched down.

Sleeves: Long dolman sleeves cut in one with the upper front and back, the underarm seam sewn together with the side seam; folded cuffs sewn into rings.

Front: Upper front in two pieces with a centre front seam, gathered between notches into the yoke.

Back: Upper back in two pieces with a centre back seam, gathered into the yoke in the same way as the front.

Waist: Separate front and back yokes form a wide band at the waist.

Skirt: Front and back skirt pieces gathered at the upper edge and joined to the yoke, seam pressed up.

Closure: Zip, 15–18 cm, in the left side seam starting at the upper edge of the yoke.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hem topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering in three places, binding a gathered V-neck in knit fabric and a zip set into a knit side seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit tape (or bias binding), 4 cm wide, for the neckline
  • Zip, 15–18 cm

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Upper Back – 2 pieces
  • Upper Front – 2 pieces
  • Back Yoke – 1 piece
  • Front Yoke – 1 piece
  • Lower Part – 2 pieces
  • Cuff – 2 pieces

Tip: When sewing knit fabrics, use a special elastic stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance should be topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. Alternatively, you can sew the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.
