Tech. Description

Gathered Scoop Neck Blouson Top

A sleeveless women's blouson top for knit fabric, with a wide gathered scoop neckline bound with bias tape and a double-layer hem band that is itself gathered at the sides. Front and back are each cut in one piece on the fold.

When To Wear

  • Spring and summer, with jeans, straight trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • Under an open cardigan or jacket in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose, blousing body gathered at the neckline and at the lower edge into a band.

Neckline: Wide scoop, gathered at the front and back (gathering amount marked on the pattern) and bound with knit tape or bias binding; cut without seam allowance at the neck edge.

Sleeves: None; the shoulders are slightly extended, and the armhole edges are serged, turned under and topstitched.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, no closure.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Waist: Lower band of two pieces joined into a ring and folded in half lengthwise; its side edges are gathered to 16–18 cm, giving the band its ruched look. The gathered lower edge of the body is sewn to it.

Finishing: Shoulder seams sewn one at a time so the neckline can be bound flat; side seams sewn from the armhole notch down; seams serged and pressed towards the back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering knit fabric evenly, binding a gathered neckline and fitting a gathered body to a gathered double band.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with low to medium stretch and good drape, made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit tape or bias binding, 4 cm wide, for the neckline (length given on the front pattern piece)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece on fold
  • Front – 1 piece on fold
  • Lower trim strip – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the right shoulder seam of the back and front. Serge the seam and press towards the back.
  2. Along the neckline edge, sew a basting stitch with loosely tensioned stitches and gather. The gathering amount is indicated on the pattern pieces. Finish the neckline with bias binding. Stitch the left shoulder seam. Serge the seam and press towards the back.
  3. On the side seam, clip the seam allowance near the notches. Stitch the side seams of the back and front from the notches to the bottom. Serge the seams and press towards the back.
  4. Fold the lower trim strip pieces right sides together and stitch into a loop along the short sides. Fold the trim strip in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Along the side edges of the trim strip, sew a basting stitch with loosely tensioned stitches and gather to 16-18 cm.
  5. Along the bottom edge of the back and front, sew a basting stitch with loosely tensioned stitches and gather. Equalize the length of the bottom edge of the back and front with the trim strip edge. Attach the trim strip, serge the seams, and press upwards.
  6. Serge the armhole edge, fold under, and topstitch.
