Tech. Description

Tunic with Draped Cascade Hem

A women's long-sleeved tunic for knit fabric with a scoop neck. The bodice ends in a V-shaped seam at hip level, pointing down at the centre front and back, and two separate lower panels attached to it fall in pointed folds that part at the centre front and centre back.

When To Wear

  • Over leggings or slim trousers for everyday wear.
  • In spring and autumn, on its own or under an open jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body down to the hip seam, then loose and draped below it.

Length: Tunic length, uneven, with the points of the lower panels hanging lowest.

Neckline: Scoop neck, overlocked, turned in and topstitched.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves.

Front: One piece, with no centre front seam; its lower edge forms the V-shaped seam.

Back: One piece, same V-shaped lower edge as the front.

Skirt: Two lower panels. Their side and lower edges are overlocked, turned up and topstitched before attaching (lower edge first, then the sides). Each panel is sewn to the bodice matching the notches; the bodice edge is 2 cm longer than the panel edge, 1 cm at each end, so the hemmed panel edges sit clear of the seam ends.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pattern pieces and no closures; the step that needs care is attaching the pre-hemmed lower panels to the pointed bodice seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or low stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for the hems

Cutter's Must

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Lower – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also sew the pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the back and front. Serge the seams and press them towards the back.
  2. Serge the side and bottom edges of the lower. Fold and topstitch the bottom edge first, then the side edges.
  3. Place the lower and the front right sides together, aligning the corresponding notches. Please note: the length of the bodice edge is 2 cm longer than the lower edge (1 cm on each side). This is normal. Attach the lower to the upper, press the seam allowances downwards and serge.
  4. Stitch the sleeve seams. Serge the seams and press.
  5. Set the sleeves into the armholes, aligning the notches. Serge the seams and press.
  6. Serge the neckline edge, fold and topstitch.
