Tech. Description

Gathered Ruffle Babydoll Nightdress

A short women's nightdress in chiffon with two darted cups set into the front, a gathered double-edged ruffle around the neckline that also forms the shoulder straps, and a matching ruffle at the hem. Pull-on, with no fastenings.

When To Wear

  • As a summer nightdress.
  • As part of a sleepwear set, under a light robe.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the bust by the cups, falling straight and slightly widening to the hem.

Length: Mini, to the upper thigh.

Neckline: Square at the back; at the front it follows the upper edge of the cups. The whole neckline is edged with an 8 cm ruffle, gathered along its centre, with decorative trim stitched over the gathering line.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; the neckline ruffle continues over the shoulders as gathered straps. The lower armholes are finished with a 4 cm bias binding turned to the wrong side.

Front: One front piece with two cups set in; each cup has a dart, trimmed to 0.5 cm and overlocked.

Back: One piece with a straight upper edge.

Finishing: Side seams pressed towards the back and overlocked. The hem ruffle, 8 cm wide, is joined into a ring, gathered along its centre to the length of the lower edge and topstitched on with decorative trim over the gathering line. All ruffle edges are finished with a rolled hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Setting shaped cups into the front, rolled hems and even gathering on chiffon, bias-bound armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Chiffon.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative trim (braid) for the neckline and hem ruffles

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Cup – 2 pieces
  • Also cut from main fabric (no pattern piece): bias binding strips 4 cm wide for the lower armholes; neckline ruffle strip 8 cm wide; hem ruffle strip 8 cm wide (approximate lengths are marked on the Back piece)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Cup pieces, trim the dart allowances to 0.5 cm and overlock. Stitch the cups into the Front and overlock the seam allowances.
  2. Stitch the side seams, press the seam allowances towards the back and overlock.
  3. Overlock the upper and lower edges.
  4. Cut bias binding strips from the main fabric, 4 cm wide and as long as the lower part of the armhole. Press each strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Place the binding on the lower armhole, right sides together, and stitch. Turn the binding to the wrong side and understitch the seam allowance to the binding 0.1 cm from the seam.
  5. Cut the neckline ruffle strip from the main fabric, 8 cm wide (the approximate length is marked on the Back piece). Finish all edges with a rolled hem, sew a line of long, loose stitches along the middle and gather to the required length (also marked on the Back piece). Topstitch the decorative trim onto the ruffle, then topstitch the ruffle onto the neckline edge of the back and front, forming the straps at the same time.
  6. Cut the hem ruffle strip from the main fabric, 8 cm wide (the approximate length is marked on the Back piece). Stitch it into a ring, press the seam open and overlock. Finish the long edges with a rolled hem, sew a line of long, loose stitches along the middle and gather to the length of the lower edge. Topstitch the decorative trim onto the ruffle, then topstitch the ruffle onto the lower edge of the nightdress.
