A women's fitted cheongsam dress with a stand collar, cap sleeves cut in one with the bodice and a curved upper front overlap edged with bias binding and fastened with three decorative loop-and-button closures over hooks. Side slits and a zip in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • For a dinner, a party or a family celebration, made up in silk satin.
  • In summer and at indoor events: the shoulders are covered only by short cap sleeves.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting sheath shaped by darts.

Length: Around the knee, with side slits.

Collar: Stand collar with rounded ends, cut in two layers with the inner layer interfaced, topstitched around the edge.

Sleeves: Cap sleeves cut in one with the front and back; armhole edges turned under and topstitched.

Front: One-piece front with a bust dart and waist darts. A separate upper front overlaps it along a curved line from the neck to the right side seam; both the curved edge of the front and the lower edge of the upper front are bound with bias binding.

Closure: Four hooks and eyes hold the upper front; three decorative loops with buttons are sewn on top. Concealed zip in the left side seam.

Back: Centre back seam and waist darts.

Finishing: Side slits with faced lower corners, slit allowances secured with fusible web; hem turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Binding a curved edge with bias tape, setting a concealed zip into a side seam, a two-layer stand collar, faced slit corners, working with slippery satin.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk satin fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (inner stand collar)
  • Concealed zip
  • Bias binding
  • 3 decorative hanging loops
  • 3 buttons
  • 4 hooks
  • Fusible web (slit allowances)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Stand Collar – 2 pieces
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Upper Front – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Stand Collar (inner) – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the inner Stand Collar.
  2. Stitch and press down the bust dart on the front; stitch and press towards the center the waist darts on the back and front.
  3. Press the bias tape in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Bind the lower edge of the Upper Front and the curved edge of the Front with it.
  4. Serge the side edges of the Back, Front and Upper Front, and the armhole edges of the Front, Upper Front and Back. Stitch and serge the shoulder seams. Press the shoulder seam allowances towards the back.
  5. Stitch the left side seam between the Upper Front and the Back and press open.
  6. Stitch the left side seam of the Front from the zipper mark to the side slit. Press the seam allowances open, pressing the edges of the zipper opening. Place the zipper under the slit so that the teeth are not visible and stitch. Stitch the right side seam down to the notch and press open, leaving the side slit unstitched. Fold and topstitch the armhole seam allowances.
  7. Stitch and serge the center back seam.
  8. Press under the lower edge of one Stand Collar by 1 cm. Stitch the Stand Collar pieces together along the outer contour. Trim the allowances at the rounded ends, turn right side out and press. Stitch the interfaced Stand Collar into the neckline and topstitch the pressed edge of the other collar piece over the seam. Topstitch around the collar.
  9. Measure the length of the slits. Trim and serge the hem of the dress. Stitch the lower corners of the slits, and turn out the corners, straightening them. Secure the slit seam allowances to the main pieces with fusible web. Fold and topstitch the hem of the garment.
  10. Sew the hook loops (eyes) to the Upper Front and the hooks to the Front. Sew the decorative loops and buttons onto the Front and Upper Front.
