Tech. Description

Off-Shoulder Long Sleeve Tie Cuff Top

A women's knit top with a wide asymmetric neckline, an asymmetric hem that drops into a draped point on one side, and long set-in sleeves gathered at the lower edge by ties threaded through a casing.

When To Wear

  • With slim trousers, jeans or a pencil skirt in autumn and spring.
  • For an evening out, with the ties drawn up to ruche the lower sleeves.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body, with the hem falling lower and draping into a point at one side.

Neckline: Wide, asymmetric neckline, lower towards one shoulder; edge overlocked, turned under and topstitched.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves, cut differently on each side. The right sleeve has a centre seam topstitched 0.7 cm from the seam, with a gap left near the lower notch for the tie. The left sleeve is cut in one piece with a separate casing strip stitched on the inside along the markings. A tie in each casing gathers the lower sleeve.

Front: One piece, no darts or seams.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Shoulder and side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back; hems of body and sleeves overlocked, turned under and topstitched. Ties are self-fabric strips stitched 0.5 cm from the fold and turned out.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Overlocked seams and turned hems on knit fabric; the only extra steps are the sleeve casings and the narrow ties.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric. Sew with a narrow zigzag or stretch stitch, and finish the hems with an overlocker and a twin needle so they keep their stretch.

Additional Supplies

  • Self-fabric strips for 2 ties (cut by measurement)
  • Twin needle for hems

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Upper Right Sleeve – 1 piece
  • Lower Right Sleeve – 1 piece
  • Left Sleeve – 1 piece
  • Left Sleeve Casing – 1 piece
  • Ties – 2 pieces (cut by measurement; no pattern piece)

Sewing Instructions

Tip: To keep the fabric stretchy in the areas of finished seams, stitch the cut pieces with a narrow zigzag or special stretch stitch. To keep the bottom edge stretchy, the hem should be overlocked and then stitched using a twin needle. The same applies to finishing other edges of the garment that should not lose elasticity. These recommendations do not apply to industrial production.

  1. Overlock the centre edges of the Upper Right Sleeve and Lower Right Sleeve. Stitch the centre seam of the right sleeve, leaving an opening in the seam between the notches. Press the seam open. Topstitch the seam allowances 0.7 cm from the seam, stopping 2 cm above the hem allowance and leaving a gap in the stitching near the lower notch for threading the tie.
  2. Place the Left Sleeve Casing on the wrong side of the Left Sleeve according to the markings, turning under the lower end of the strip. Baste and topstitch the casing along the markings.
  3. Cut strips for the ties. Fold each strip lengthwise and stitch 0.5 cm from the fold. Turn the ties right side out and press. Tuck the ends in and stitch them closed.
  4. Stitch and overlock the shoulder and side seams of the top. Press the side and shoulder seams towards the back.
  5. Stitch and overlock the underarm seams of the sleeves. Press the seams towards the back of the sleeve.
  6. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches.
  7. Overlock the neckline edge of the front and back, the sleeve hems and the hem of the top. Turn under the overlocked edges and topstitch. Thread the ties through the casings. Draw up the fabric on the ties, distribute the gathers evenly and tie the ends.
