Tech. Description

Drawstring Waist Shirt Blouse with Sleeve Ties

A women's cropped shirt blouse with a collar on a stand and a buttoned folded placket. Drawstrings run in topstitched casings above the hem and twice on each long sleeve, above the elbow and above the wrist.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, with high-waisted trousers, jeans or skirts.
  • For everyday wear, with the ties pulled in or left loose.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and straight, gathered by a drawstring a short distance above the hem, which forms a frill below the casing.

Length: Cropped, around the high hip.

Collar: Pointed shirt collar on a separate stand; upper collar and stand interfaced.

Front: Cut-on placket pressed double to the wrong side and interfaced; buttonholes on the right front.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves with an upper and a lower casing; the ties exit through buttonhole openings, gathering the sleeve above the elbow and forming a frill at the wrist.

Waist: Front and back casings joined into one strip and topstitched to the wrong side along markings; the ties exit through buttonhole openings on the fronts.

Back: One piece, no yoke.

Finishing: Casing edges pressed under 0.8 cm; ties stitched 0.7 cm from the fold; hems turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Collar with stand, a folded front placket, buttonholes, and five topstitched drawstring casings with worked tie openings.

Fabric Recommendations

Cotton, linen or blended fabrics.

  • Fusible interfacing (placket, upper collar, stand, small pieces behind the tie openings)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the plackets, the upper Collar and the Stand Collar.
  2. On the Fronts and Sleeves, work the tie openings as buttonholes at the markings, first fusing a small piece of interfacing to the wrong side.
  3. Press the placket to the wrong side along the fold lines. Press the double-folded plackets to the wrong side, baste them to the neckline edges of the Fronts and stitch them at the lower edges of the Fronts.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams of the blouse.
  5. Stitch the side seams of the blouse.
  6. Stitch the upper and under Collar together, trim the allowances and turn right side out.
  7. Stitch the Stand Collar pieces together, inserting the Collar between them.
  8. Stitch the inner stand with the collar to the neckline, turn under the open edge of the outer stand and topstitch it into the attachment seam.
  9. Stitch the sleeve seams.
  10. Press the hem of the sleeve to the wrong side and topstitch.
  11. Stitch the Front Casings to the Back Casing.
  12. On the casing strips, press the long edges to the wrong side by 0.8 cm. Place the strips on the wrong side of the blouse and sleeves, turn under the ends and baste. From the right side, topstitch the strips along the markings: the Upper Casing and Lower Casing on the sleeves, and the joined Front and Back Casings on the body.
  13. Set in the sleeves, easing the cap.
  14. On the ties, turn under the ends. Fold the ties lengthwise and stitch 0.7 cm from the fold. Turn out the ties and press. Stitch the ends closed. Thread the ties through the casings.
  15. Turn up and topstitch the hem of the blouse.
  16. Make buttonholes on the right front and sew the buttons on the left front.
