Tech. Description

Ruffled Wrap Maxi Dress

A maxi-length women's wrap dress with a V-neckline, a flounce along the neckline of the right front, thin straps in contrast fabric that cross at the back, and two contrast ties at the waist.

When To Wear

  • Summer days, holidays and beach towns.
  • Warm-weather evening events with flat sandals or heels.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Bodice shaped with bust darts and waist darts, skirt flaring gently to the hem.

Length: Ankle length.

Neckline: V-neckline formed by the wrap; the neckline edge is bound by the strap strips, which continue into the straps.

Front: Two wrap fronts with cut-on facings; a flounce with a narrow rolled hem is basted to the right front along the neckline and armhole.

Closure: Wrap front tied at the waist: one tie set into the left side seam, the other sewn under the corner of the right front.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with waist darts; the straps cross over the back and are sewn on after fitting.

Finishing: Interfaced front and back facings understitched 1–2 mm from the seam; turned-up hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A narrow rolled hem on a flounce, combined cut-on and separate facings, binding that turns into straps, and strap length adjusted on the body.

Fabric Recommendations

Light dress fabrics such as silk, with a contrast fabric for the straps and ties.

Additional Supplies

  • Contrast fabric (straps, ties)
  • Fusible interfacing (cut-on front facings, front facings, back facing)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Flounce – 1 piece
  • Back – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Front Facing – 2 pieces
  • Back Facing – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • From contrast fabric:
  • Strap – 2 pieces
  • Waistband (tie) – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing: fuse the cut-on front facings, the Back Facing and the Front Facings.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts. Press bust dart allowances downwards and waist dart allowances towards the center back.
  2. Finish the curved edge of the Flounce with a narrow rolled hem: fold the edge 1 cm to the wrong side and topstitch 1 mm from the fold. Trim the allowance 1 mm from the stitching, fold again as narrowly as possible and stitch over the previous line.
  3. Place the Flounce wrong side down onto the right side of the right front and baste along the neckline and armhole edges.
  4. Fold each Waistband (tie) piece in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long and one short side at presser-foot width. Turn the ties right side out, baste and press.
  5. Stitch the side seams of the dress, inserting one tie into the left side seam.
  6. Press the cut-on front facing to the wrong side. Stitch the Front Facings and Back Facing together. Attach the Front Facings to the cut-on facings. Place the facings onto the dress, right sides together, and stitch along the upper edge. Fold the facing to the inside and understitch it to the seam allowance 1–2 mm from the seam.
  7. Fold the Straps in half lengthwise, right sides out, and press. Unfold each strip, fold the long edges to the center crease on the wrong side and fold the strip again along the crease. Trim the neckline allowance of the dress to 0.5 cm. Insert the neckline edge into the finished binding formed by the strap strip and topstitch 1 mm from the lower fold.
  8. Sew the second tie under the corner of the right front between the cross marks.
  9. Finish the hem of the dress with a turned-up hem.
  10. Try on the dress, adjust the length of the straps and sew their back ends to the back.
