STRAP DRESS
Fabric & Materials
FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS: light, well-draping dress fabrics. YOU WILL NEED: Blended fabric, 150 cm wide; lining fabric; 1 zipper.
Cutting Plan
- From main fabric:
- 1. Back - 2 pieces
- 2. Front – 1 piece on fold
- 3. Front skirt panel – 1 piece on fold
- 4. Back skirt panel – 2 pieces
- 5. Strap – 2 pieces
- From LINING fabric:
- 6. Back - 2 pieces
- 7. Front – 1 piece on fold
- 8. Front skirt panel – 1 piece on fold
- 9. Back skirt panel – 2 pieces
Sewing Instructions
- The front and back skirt panels are cut on the bias.
- Before hemming the dress, let it hang for a day, then re-draw the hemline.
- Stitch darts, press depths flat.
- Stitch side seams, attach skirt to dress bodice.
- Stitch center back seam from hem to zipper marking.
- Insert zipper.
- Fold straps lengthwise in half, right sides together, stitch along the long edge, turn right side out and press.
- Baste front ends of straps under the upper corners of the front bodice.
- On lining pieces, stitch darts and seams.
- Place main fabric dress and lining right sides together.
- Fold back seam allowances of the lining back pieces, stopping 5 mm before the zipper edges, and pin to the neckline.
- Fold seam allowances along the zipper edges of the main garment to the right side.
- Stitch armholes and neckline, catching the front ends of the straps.
- Turn lining to the wrong side and stitch to the zipper tape and waist seam allowances.
- Try on the dress, adjust strap length and stitch their back ends under the upper corners of the back bodice.
- Press hem allowance to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches.
- Hem the lining so that it is 1.5 cm shorter than the main dress.
