Tech. Description

Wrap Front Maxi Dress with Side Tie

A sleeveless, straight women's maxi dress with a mock-wrap front: a separate overlay panel runs diagonally from the right shoulder to the left side, where it ties, and its free edge continues down to the hem. Centre back zipper, darts at front and back, bias-bound armholes.

When To Wear

  • On hot summer days and on holiday, in crinkle cotton batiste.
  • With flat sandals for the day, or with heels and a light wrap in the evening.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Narrow and straight, close to the body, shaped by bust darts at the front and waist darts at the back; no waist seam.

Length: Maxi, to the ankle.

Neckline: High boat-shaped neckline, turned under and topstitched 0.75 cm from the edge; the overlay neckline sits just above it and is topstitched 1 cm from the edge.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with folded bias binding turned to the inside and topstitched close to the edge.

Front: One-piece front under a one-piece overlay (front fly piece), joined at the right shoulder, right armhole and right side seam. The slanted front edge of the overlay is topstitched 1 cm from the edge.

Closure: 60 cm zipper in the centre back seam, set so the teeth are hidden. Two ties, 1 cm wide when finished, one in the left side seam and one under the corner of the overlay, knot together at the left side.

Back: Two back pieces with a centre back seam and waist darts.

Finishing: Hems of the front, back and overlay overlocked, turned up and stitched by hand.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Layering and basting the overlay to the front, a centre back zipper, bias-bound armholes and narrow turned edges on light fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Light dress fabrics, such as crinkle-effect batiste.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts. Press bust dart allowances downwards, waist dart allowances towards the center back line.
  2. Stitch the center back seam below the slit mark for the zipper.
  3. Press the seam allowance along the slanted section of the right side seam of the front to the wrong side, turn under and topstitch.
  4. Stitch the left shoulder seam. Trim seam allowances close to the stitching, serge together and press forward.
  5. Press the seam allowances along the neckline edges of the front and back pieces to the wrong side, turn under and topstitch at a distance of 0.75 cm.
  6. Press the seam allowances along the edges of the zipper slit to the wrong side. Attach the zipper so that the teeth are not visible, turning under the upper ends of the zipper tapes.
  7. Place the Front Fly Piece wrong side onto the right side of the front, aligning the center front lines, as well as the neckline edge of the front with the alignment line marked on the wrong side of the Front Fly Piece. Baste the edges of the right armholes and the right side seams up to the slanted section.
  8. Stitch the right shoulder seam, press seam allowances forward, leave the seam allowance along the neckline edge of the Front Fly Piece protruding.
  9. Fold each Armhole Facing (bias binding) in half lengthwise and press. Stitch the folded bias binding to the armhole edge, with the fold of the bias binding lying on the garment at a width of 0.75 cm. Trim seam allowances to a width of 0.5 cm. Turn the bias binding to the wrong side, topstitch the dress along the armhole close to the edge.
  10. Stitch each Tie right sides together, turn out and press to a finished width of 1 cm. Baste one end of one tie to the left side seam of the front between the transverse notches.
  11. Stitch the side seams. Press seam allowances open and attach at the armholes.
  12. Serge the lower edges of the front, back, and Front Fly Piece, press the hem allowances to the wrong side and hand stitch.
  13. Press the seam allowance along the slanted front edge of the Front Fly Piece to the wrong side, turn under and baste.
  14. Serge the seam allowance along the neckline edge of the Front Fly Piece, press to the wrong side and baste.
  15. Topstitch the Front Fly Piece along the neckline and front edges at a distance of 1.0 cm.
  16. Attach the second tie under the corner of the Front Fly Piece between the transverse notches.
