Tech. Description

Maxi Dress with Tie Front Panels

A long women's dress with a high waist seam, short set-in sleeves and two fabric layers at the front: a buttoned underlayer in contrast fabric and free-hanging outer front panels that tie in a knot under the bust. The panel seams of the flared skirt open into slits.

When To Wear

  • In summer, for daytime outings, holidays and garden parties.
  • With flat sandals or espadrilles; the slits leave room for walking.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice above a high waist seam, with a long skirt flaring from panel seams.

Length: Maxi, to the ankle.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with facings, understitched and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves with the cap eased in, turned-up hems and fabric shoulder pads.

Front: The contrast underlayer has princess seams in the bodice, a button opening at the centre front down to the high waist seam and a panelled lower part. Over it hang outer front panels, faced along the upper edge, caught into the shoulder and armhole seams and knotted together under the bust.

Closure: Buttons and buttonholes at the centre front of the underlayer.

Back: Upper back with darts and princess seams, joined at the high waist seam to a lower back made of four panels.

Skirt: Panel seams of the back and of the outer front stitched only to the slit notches; the contrast underlayer shows through the front slits.

Finishing: Hem, slit edges and the front edges of the outer panels finished with a turned-under hem; sleeve and armhole seam allowances overlocked together.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Many panels joined in two layers, slits in the panel seams, faced free-hanging panels caught into the armhole with the sleeve, and buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Light woven dress fabrics with soft drape, such as linen, cotton or viscose, combined with a contrast print or colour for the front underlayer.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Middle Back. Join the upper and lower back sections in sequence (Middle Back, Side Back, Middle Lower Back, Lower Side Back), stitching the panel seams only down to the slit notches.
  2. Finish the Detachable Upper Piece with the Detachable Piece Facing. Join the upper and lower sections of the free-hanging outer front (Detachable Upper Piece, Detachable Side Piece Front, Detachable Lower Middle Piece Front, Detachable Lower Side Piece Front), stitching the panel seams down to the slit notches. Stitch the panel seams of the upper front (Middle Front and Side Front). Stitch the shoulder seams of the back and both front layers together.
  3. Front edges and neckline: fuse interfacing to the Back Neckline Facing and Center Front Facings. Stitch the Back Neckline Facing to the Center Front Facings and press the seams open. Overlock the inner edges of the facings. Stitch the facings to the neckline and front edges, understitch, topstitch 0.5 cm from the edge and press.
  4. Stitch the seams of the lower front (Middle Lower Front and Lower Side Front). Attach the lower front to the upper front.
  5. Sleeves: press the lower sleeve edges and finish the sleeve hems with a turned-under hem. Set the sleeves into the armholes, aligning the armhole edges of the front and the free-hanging outer front, easing the cap and matching the notches. Overlock the sleeve and armhole seam allowances together. Attach the Shoulder Pads.
  6. Hem: finish the garment hem, the edges of the slits and the front edges of the free-hanging outer panels with a turned-under hem.
  7. Make buttonholes and sew on the buttons. Tie the free-hanging outer panels in a knot under the bust.
