Tech. Description

Sleeveless Column Dress With Buttoned Sides

Introducing a sophisticated sleeveless column dress pattern with open sides, where the front and back are joined at waist level by functional buttoned tabs.

When To Wear

This versatile dress is perfect for a range of occasions, offering effortless style and a modern edge:

  • Formal & Semi-Formal Events: Its elegant column silhouette and unique detailing make it suitable for special occasions or evening gatherings.
  • Professional Settings: a sophisticated choice for the office or business events, offering a polished yet comfortable look.
  • Stylish Social Gatherings: Perfect for luncheons, dinners, or gallery visits where modern elegance is desired.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a contemporary column silhouette with bust darts, falling from the shoulders in a straight line.

Neckline: a classic jewel neckline finished with facings, offering a clean and elegant frame for the face.

Sleeves: Sleeveless design, with armholes finished with bias binding.

Closure: Distinctive button tabs on both sides at waist level, three buttons on each side (six in total), fastening the front to the back.

Side Opening: The side seams are not stitched: below the buttoned tabs the sides stay open down to the hem, creating long side slits.

Length: Long length, falling well below the knee for an elongated and sophisticated profile.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires skills in constructing facings, bias binding application, and precise button tab construction.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose fabrics with a good drape and body, suitable for a structured yet flowing silhouette:

  • Suiting fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • 6 buttons

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Side seam allowances of front and back – 5 cm. Hem allowance – 3 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece (cut on fold)
    • Front – 1 piece (cut on fold)
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Button Tab (labelled "Zastezjka" on the pattern) – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Button Tab – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Back Neckline Facing, Front Neckline Facing and Button Tabs.
  2. Stitch the bust darts and press the dart intakes upwards.
  3. Stitch the shoulder seams, press the seam allowances towards the Back and overlock.
  4. Cut (if not using ready-made) a bias strip 4 cm wide and as long as the armhole + 4 cm. Fold the bias strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Place the binding on the right side of the armhole, raw edges aligned, and stitch. On the Back, stitch the binding only down to the marked button-extension line. Clip the seam allowances. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the garment. Press.
  5. Stitch the Button Tab to the Front along the side and horizontal edges. Clip the Front seam allowance and press the seam allowances towards the Button Tab. Overlock the side seam allowance of the Front, starting from the top of the tab. Stitch across the upper edge of the Button Tab and trim the seam allowances. Turn the Button Tab and the seam allowance to the wrong side and press. Topstitch the Button Tab allowances into the joining seam and topstitch the Front along the side edge.
  6. Overlock the side seam allowance of the Back. Stitch the upper corner of the cut-in-one button extension of the Back. Fold the Back side seam allowances to the wrong side and topstitch.
  7. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Front Neckline Facing and Back Neckline Facing and press them open. Overlock the outer edge. Place the facings on the Front and Back right sides together and stitch around the neckline. Clip the seam allowances on the curves, turn the facings to the wrong side, straighten and press. Tack the facings to the shoulder seams.
  8. Overlock the hem edge, press it to the wrong side and topstitch.
  9. Make buttonholes on the Button Tabs. Sew buttons on the Back to match the buttonholes.
