Fitted Asymmetrical Crossover Vest

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a tailored vest, featuring a distinctive asymmetrical crossover front and a sleek, fitted silhouette.

When To Wear

This vest is designed for versatile styling, making it an ideal choice for:

  • Smart Casual: Elevates everyday outfits with a polished, contemporary edge.
  • Business Casual: a stylish alternative to a blazer for professional yet relaxed settings.
  • Resort & Travel: Lightweight and chic, perfect for warm-weather vacations and sophisticated ensembles.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a sleek, fitted vest that accentuates the waist.

Neckline: a clean V-neckline without a collar.

Closure: An asymmetrical crossover front secured with four visible buttons and one internal button.

Sleeves: Sleeveless design with neat armholes.

Pockets: Two functional horizontal double-welt (jetted) pockets positioned on the lower front.

Front Hem: Features an asymmetrical, pointed hemline that complements the crossover front.

Back: Includes a center back seam and shaping darts for a contoured fit, with a straight back hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Involves precise assembly of asymmetrical pieces, construction of double-welt pockets, and neat finishing of facings, bias-bound armholes and buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose fabrics that provide both structure and a beautiful drape to enhance the vest's tailored silhouette:

  • Dense dress fabrics made from natural or blended fibers (e.g., linen blends, gabardine, cotton twill)

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • 4 buttons
  • 1 internal button

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, the patterns include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 2 cm; other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to consider paired and symmetrical parts). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 2 pieces
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    • Pocket Frame – 4 pieces
    • Bigger Pocket Bag – 2 pieces
    • Smaller Pocket Bag – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    • Pocket Frame – 4 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Back Neckline Facing, Center Front Facings and Pocket Frames.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Back pieces, press the dart intakes towards the center. Stitch the center back seam, press allowances to the left side and overlock.
  3. Stitch the darts on the Front pieces, trim the dart intakes to 1 cm, press towards the center and overlock.
  4. Mark the pocket placement on the Front. Fold the Pocket Frames in half wrong sides together and press. Mark a stitching guideline on each Pocket Frame parallel to the fold. Stitch the Bigger Pocket Bag to the upper frame. Stitch the frames to the Front. Cut the Front in the middle between the frame stitching lines. Make diagonal cuts 1-1.5 cm from the end of the pocket. Turn the frames through the opening to the wrong side, straighten the edges, adjust the ends of the frames so that the pressed folds of the frames meet flush. Secure the pocket corners from the wrong side with a double backstitch at the base of the corners. Stitch the Smaller Pocket Bag into the seam of the lower frame. Stitch the pocket bag edges together and overlock.
  5. Stitch shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  6. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Back Neckline Facing and Center Front Facings, press the allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place the facings on the garment right sides together and stitch the neckline, front edge and lower corner. Clip the allowances, trim the corners, turn the facings to the wrong side and press. Hand-tack the Back Neckline Facing to the center back seam and the facings to the shoulder seams.
  7. Cut (or use ready-made) bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise right side out and press. Place the binding on the right side of the armhole, raw edges aligned, and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side, clip the allowances and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece. Press the seam.
  8. Stitch side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  9. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  10. Make buttonholes on the right front, sew buttons on the left. Make an inner buttonhole on the left front, sew on the inner button.
