Tech. Description

Paneled V-Neck Top

A loose, hip-length women's top with short cut-on sleeves, a V-neckline and a wide double-layer band in a second fabric running around the neck and down both front edges to the hem. Contrast cuffs on the sleeves; the fronts are joined below the V by hand.

When To Wear

  • In summer, with trousers, jeans or straight skirts.
  • For the office under a jacket, with tailored trousers.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight and loose, with no darts.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: V-neck finished with a band made of four facing pieces in the trim fabric: two outer and two inner layers, each pair joined at the centre back, stitched together along the outer edge and then sewn to the front edges and neckline. The band continues around the back neck.

Sleeves: Short sleeves cut in one with the front and back, sewn in the same seam as the side seams, finished with a cuff in the trim fabric stitched into a ring.

Front: Two fronts; below the marked point the banded front edges are joined to the hem with blind stitches, so there is no opening.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no centre back seam.

Finishing: Shoulder and side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back; hem overlocked, turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Only shoulder and side seams, a pre-assembled neck band attached in one pass, ring cuffs and a topstitched hem. The curves of the V need careful clipping.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics from natural or blended fibres, plus a second fabric for the trim (neck band and cuffs).

Additional Supplies

  • Trim fabric for the neckline facings and cuffs
  • Fusible interfacing (two neckline facing pieces)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece (cut on fold)
    • Front – 2 pieces
  • From contrast fabric:
    • Neckline Facing – 4 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Neckline Facing – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to two Neckline Facing pieces.
  2. Stitch shoulder seams. Overlock and press allowances towards the back.
  3. Stitch the center back seams of the Neckline Facings in pairs. Press allowances open. Place the two Neckline Facings right sides together and stitch the outer edge. Clip allowances, turn the inner facing to the wrong side and press.

  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment. Press allowances to the wrong side and topstitch.
  8. Join the front edges from the mark to the bottom with blind stitches.
