Tech. Description

Square Neck Asymmetrical Ruffled Strap Blouse

A sleeveless women's top on wide straps that differ left and right: one plain strap, and one made of two parts with decorative trim set into its shoulder seam and a trim tie laced through six eyelets. Bust darts, faced neckline, bias-bound armholes.

When To Wear

  • In summer, with shorts, wide trousers or a skirt.
  • Under an open jacket or cardigan in warm weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, hip length, with bust darts at the front.

Neckline: Wide neckline, low and square-cut at the back, finished with interfaced front and back facings turned to the inside.

Front: One piece cut on the fold; on the left side the trim is caught into the facing seam and threaded through the eyelets of the strap, hanging as a tie.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, plain.

Sleeves: Sleeveless. The right strap is a single folded and turned strip; the left strap is joined at the shoulder from a front and a back part, with interfacing under the eyelets. Strap length is adjusted at a fitting before the straps are sewn to the back.

Finishing: Lower armholes bound with a 4 cm bias strip folded in half, turned to the inside and topstitched; side seams pressed towards the back; 2 cm hem turned and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Straps inserted between bodice and facings, trim set into seams, setting eyelets and a fitting for strap length.

Fabric Recommendations

Soft, drapey blouse fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces. Also fuse the area for eyelets on the left front strap.
  2. Stitch bust darts, press allowances upwards.
  3. Fold the right strap in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the long side. Turn the strap right side out, straighten, and press.
  4. Cut the decorative trim into two parts. Stitch the front and back left strap at the shoulder seam, inserting the decorative trim, press allowances open. Fold the left strap in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the long side. Turn the strap right side out, straighten, and press. Punch eyelets according to markings.
  5. Finish the outer edge of the front neckline facing. Place the facing on the front, right side down, and stitch the neckline and armhole area, inserting the straps between the pieces and inserting the decorative trim on the left side. Clip allowances, turn the facing to the wrong side, straighten, and press.
  6. Finish the outer edge of the back neckline facing. Place the facing on the back, right side down, and stitch the neckline and armhole area, inserting the straps between the pieces. Clip allowances, turn the facing to the wrong side, straighten, and press.

  8. Cut (or use ready-made) bias binding 4 cm wide and equal to the length of the lower armhole + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding on the armhole edge, right side, and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side, clip allowances, and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  9. Finish the hem allowance, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
  10. Thread the trim through the eyelets and secure. Attention! Before attaching the straps to the back, be sure to try on the garment and adjust their length!
