Tech. Description

Square V-Neck Ruffled Sleeve Blouse

A women's hip-length pullover blouse with a wide neckline that dips to a V at the centre front, a short front opening fastened with five buttons and rouleau loops, and short gathered sleeves with an elastic-thread frill.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, worn loose over jeans, trousers or a straight skirt.
  • Tucked into a high-waisted skirt for daytime and office wear.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, slightly widening towards the hem, with side bust darts on the front.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Wide neckline whose curved sides meet in a V point at the centre front; round neckline at the back. Finished with interfaced facings at the front and back.

Front: Front cut in one piece on the fold, with a short slit below the V. The slit is faced, and five bias-cut rouleau loops are stitched into its right edge to take five buttons.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves, gathered at the cap. Rows of elastic-thread stitching near the lower edge gather the sleeve and leave a frill below. The sleeve edge is turned and stitched, or finished with a narrow rolled hem.

Back: One piece cut on the fold; the back neck facing is topstitched along its outer edge, so a stitching line shows across the upper back.

Finishing: Hem turned up and stitched; shoulder and side seams pressed towards the back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Making and spacing rouleau loops, facing a slit opening and cutting between the stitching lines, gathering a sleeve cap and shirring with elastic thread.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse or dress fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front and back facings)
  • Elastic thread
  • 5 buttons

Cutter's Must

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back - 1 piece with fold
    • Front - 1 piece with fold
    • Sleeve - 2 pieces
    • Back facing – 1 piece
    • Front facing – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back facing – 1 piece
    • Front facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the pieces.
  2. Stitch darts on the front piece. Press dart allowances upwards.
  3. Cut a strip for loop closures at a 45-degree angle, approximately 30 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch 0.3 cm from the fold. Trim seam allowances close to the stitching, turn the strip right side out, and press the rouleau. Cut into 5 pieces. Adjust the length of the loops. Stitch the loops onto the right front piece along the opening (folds facing away from the edge).
  4. Overlock the outer edge of the front facing. Place the front facing and front piece right sides together and stitch the neckline edge and opening 0.2 cm from each side. Cut between the stitching lines, turn the facing to the wrong side, press, and secure the facing to the main garment along the edges.
  5. Overlock the outer edge of the back facing. Place the back facing and back piece right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Start and end the stitching precisely at the marked shoulder seam line.
  6. Stitch shoulder seams, inserting the front piece between the back and back facing, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Turn the back facing to the wrong side, press, and stitch the facing to the back along the outer edge.
  7. Stitch side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances and overlock. Along the sleeve cap, stitch with a loosened upper thread and gather. Overlock the lower edge of the sleeve, press to the wrong side and stitch. (The bottom of the sleeve can also be overlocked with a narrow rolled hem. Before that, the allowance of the lower sleeve edge should be trimmed.) Stitch lines using elastic thread according to markings.
  9. Set sleeves into armholes, press allowances and overlock.
  10. Overlock the hem allowance of the garment, press to the wrong side and stitch.
