Tech. Description

Pencil Skirt with Curved Overlay Panel

A women's pencil skirt for stable knit fabric, with shaped yokes instead of a waistband and a right front panel that overlaps the left one. The curved edge of the overlay is finished with a faced trim band and opens into a slit near the hem.

When To Wear

  • For the office with blouses, fitted knit tops and jackets.
  • In autumn and winter with tights and boots.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Narrow pencil skirt, tapering slightly to the hem.

Length: Knee length.

Front: Two front panels: the right panel with a curved trim band (two layers, one interfaced) is laid over the left panel and joined to it at the top and side edges. The left panel edge under the overlay is turned under and topstitched or bound with bias binding.

Waist: Contoured front yoke and two-piece back yoke at the waist, no waistband. The inner yokes are interfaced and serve as facings, understitched and stitched in the ditch of the yoke seam.

Back: Darts below the yoke and a centre back seam.

Closure: Concealed zipper in the centre back seam.

Finishing: Hem turned up 3 cm and sewn by hand with blind stitches.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A faced curved trim band, a two-layer front, yokes with facings and a concealed zipper in knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Dense knit fabrics of medium stretch made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit fusible interfacing (inner yokes, one trim band piece)
  • 1 concealed zipper
  • Bias binding (optional, for the edge of the left front panel)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 3 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! Markings are made on the right side.

  • From main fabric:
    • Back Skirt – 2 pieces
    • Back Yoke – 4 pieces
    • Front Right Skirt – 1 piece
    • Front Left Skirt – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the inner Back Yoke and Front Yoke pieces and to one Trimming piece.
  2. Stitch darts on the back. Press the dart depth towards the center. Attach the outer Back Yoke to the Back Skirt, press seam allowances upwards. Overlock the center back edges separately on each piece. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom. Press seam allowances open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  3. Place the Trimming pieces right sides together and stitch the outer and lower edges. Turn the inner Trimming to the wrong side and press. Attach the Trimming to the Front Right Skirt. Overlock the allowance and press it towards the skirt. Overlock the outer edge of the Front Left Skirt, press it to the wrong side and topstitch. The allowance can also be finished with bias binding; for this, trim the allowance to 0.5 cm, bind the edge, fold inwards and topstitch.
  4. Place the Front Right Skirt over the Front Left Skirt, aligning the top and side edges, and treat them as one piece from now on. Attach the outer Front Yoke to the front, press seam allowances upwards.
  5. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  6. Stitch the side seams of the inner yokes (hereinafter - facings), press allowances open. Overlock the lower edge. Place the facing and the skirt right sides together and stitch the upper edge. Topstitch the allowances to the facing 0.2 cm from the stitching line. Fold the facing to the wrong side, press. Fold the center edges of the facing and sew to the zipper tape. Secure the facing by stitching in the ditch of the outer yoke seam.
  7. Overlock the lower edge of the skirt, press to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches.
