Tech. Description

Asymmetrical Draped Sleeveless Top

A women's sleeveless hip-length top with soft pleats gathered at the left shoulder, held by a decorative pin. The front is one asymmetric piece; the back has a keyhole slit with a button and loop.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, with trousers or a skirt.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan for the office.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, slightly loose.

Length: To the hip.

Neckline: Round, bound with a 4 cm bias strip folded in half and topstitched along the fold.

Front: Cut as one piece; even pleats laid at the left shoulder seam fall diagonally across the front and are fixed with a decorative pin.

Back: Cut on the fold, with a slit at the centre back neck finished with bias binding and fastened with a button and a rouleau loop.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes bound with a 4 cm bias strip.

Finishing: Hem double-turned 1 cm and 1 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Only two pattern pieces; the bias-bound back slit and the rouleau loop need some care.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk blouse fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • 1 button
  • Decorative pin
  • Bias binding for the armholes (or cut from the main fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns are without seam allowances. Seam allowances: all allowances – 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to consider paired and symmetrical parts). Attention! Markings on the patterns are on the right side!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back - 1 piece with fold
    • Front - 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Cut a bias binding for the back slit, length equal to double the slit length + 4 cm and width 5 cm. Press the binding in half lengthwise, right side out. Mark the slit line on the back, cut. Lay the back flat along the slit line, place the binding on the right side, aligning the raw edges, and stitch. The seam allowance along the slit length is 0.5 – 0.7 cm, decreasing to 0.2 cm at the bottom of the slit. Fold the binding to the wrong side, enclosing the seam, and topstitch into the seam.
  2. On the left shoulder edge of the front, create and secure arbitrary even pleats.
  3. Stitch the shoulder edges, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Cut a bias strip 2.5 cm wide and 10 cm long for the loop. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right side in, and stitch 0.3 cm from the fold. Trim allowances close to the stitching, turn the strip right side out and straighten the rouleau. Adjust the loop length.
  5. Cut a bias binding 4 cm wide and length equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding on the neckline edge, right side facing, extending the ends, and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side, clip the seams, and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece. Press the seam. Stitch the loop to the left side of the back slit.
  6. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and length equal to the armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding on the armhole edge, right side facing, and stitch, fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece.
  7. Stitch the side edges, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Press the bottom edge of the garment up by 1 cm, then another 1 cm, and topstitch.
  9. Sew the button to the right side of the back slit.
  10. Secure the pleats on the left side of the front with a decorative pin.
