Tech. Description

Bow-Detail Lace Yoke Dress

A women's knee-length dress with short lace sleeves and lace-overlaid front yokes that form a raglan line on the front. A lace bow sits at the waist on the centre front panel, and below it a topstitched centre front seam ends in a slit at the hem.

When To Wear

  • For family celebrations and dinners, with lace in a matching colour.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, slightly flared to the hem, shaped by front princess seams and back darts.

Length: Knee length.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with interfaced facings.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves cut from lace. On the front, lace yokes laid over the main fabric run from the neckline to the armhole, giving a raglan line.

Waist: A folded lace bow wrapped with a narrow stitched loop is basted to the centre front panel and caught into the princess and waist seams.

Back: Centre back seam with darts.

Closure: Concealed zipper in the centre back seam.

Finishing: Hem and sleeve hems turned under and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Lace overlay on the yokes, a bow set into princess and waist seams, pleats, a slit in a topstitched seam and a concealed zipper.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Front and Back Neckline Facings. Also fuse the slit area on the Side Front pieces.
  2. Stitch the darts on the back. Press the dart allowances towards the center. Overlock the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom. Press seam allowances open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  3. Place each lace Front Yoke right side up onto the right side of the main fabric Front Yoke. Secure along the seam allowances. Then treat as one piece.
  4. Fold the Bow in half lengthwise, right side out, and place it on the Center Front. Cut a bow loop strip 8 cm wide and 6 cm long. Fold the loop piece lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the straight edge. Turn the piece right side out, wrap it around the bow, and secure it along the bottom edge. Baste the bow to the Center Front along the princess seam and lower edges. Overlock the bottom edge.
  5. Overlock the center front edges of the Side Front pieces separately. Stitch the seam from the top to the slit mark. Press seam allowances open. Topstitch along the seam at 0.5 cm.
  6. Overlock the horizontal (upper) edge of the Side Front. Form pleats, with depths directed away from the center. Stitch the front princess seams, simultaneously stitching the pieces along the horizontal edge. Press the allowance towards the center and upwards respectively. Overlock the princess seams, press towards the center.
  7. Attach the Front Yokes to the front. Overlock the allowance and press it towards the yoke.
  8. Stitch the side and shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  9. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Front and Back Neckline Facings, press allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place the facings right sides together with the garment and stitch the neckline edge. Clip allowances at curves, trim at corners, turn pieces right side out.
  10. Stitch the sleeve seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Set the sleeves into the armholes according to the notches, overlock allowances and press.
  11. Overlock the hem allowance of the garment bottom and sleeve hem, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
